Sammanfattning : Who is more likely to follow medical recommendations, invest in their health and pursue higher degrees of schooling? Behavioral economic theory provides a clear answer to this question: more patient individuals (who discount future outcomes less heavily) should be more likely to choose costs and forgo utility now, in order to get better long-run outcomes. But does this behavioral theory match up with peoples' real choices? If so, can it be used to predict important future life events? Sammanfattning : The objectives of this thesis were to increase our understanding of the mortality and complications associated with bacterial gastrointestinal infections, with focus on Salmonella and Campylobacter enteritis. Sammanfattning : Sickness absence has varied considerably in Sweden over time and increased substantially between 1997 and 2002, especially among women. The composition of such absence has also changed in that there have been increases in sick leave due to mental illness, prolongation of sickness absence periods, and a larger proportion of women than men on long-term sick leave. 15. LIVING WITH CHILDHOOD DIABETES - Family Experiences and Long-term effects
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate families’ experiences when a child is diagnosed as having type 1 diabetes, and at one and three years after diagnosis. Since childhood health and the circumstances around it in the family have been shown to have a lasting impact on adult health and circumstances, an additional aim was to examine the long-term effect of childhood diabetes on education level attained and self-assessed health.
