1. A behavioural investigation into Eristalis tenax : Pursuit, approach estimation, locomotor activity and rearing
Sammanfattning : Hoverflies are suggested to be the 2nd most important pollinator group after bees and bumblebees, and with the changing climate and dwindling numbers of pollinators it might never have been more important understanding our pollinators. Given the hoverflies’ small brains, beautiful aerial acrobatics, good temporal resolution, but limited spatial resolution, these flies make interesting study animals for flight behaviour and vision research. 2. Circadian Rhythms in Moth Sex Pheromone Communication
Sammanfattning : Sex pheromone communication and related physiological processes are regulated by circadian clock mechanisms in many moth species. This thesis includes studies of circadian rhythms in sexually relevant behaviours and communication in the Egyptian cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis, the turnip moth Agrotis segetum, the Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella and the Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella. 3. On cholinergic mechanisms involved in ethanol reinforcement. A behavioral and neurochemical study in rodents
Sammanfattning : Alcohol (ethanol) and smoking (nicotine) are commonly co-abused in human beings. Drugs of abuse interact with the brain mesolimbic dopamine system, an important part of the brain reward system. These dopaminergic neurons originate in the ventral tegmental area and project to e.g. LÄS MER
4. Acute and chronic effects by stimulants on behavior and striatal neurotransmission in the rat
Sammanfattning : Nicotine and amphetamines are the most widely abused stimulants. The main aim of the studies in this thesis was to investigate how these two drugs of abuse affect distinct regions of the rat brain involved in development of habitual and compulsive behavior, namely subregions of striatum in the rat. 5. Nicotine sensitization and loss of inhibitory control. Role of serotonin
Sammanfattning : Drug dependence is a devastating disorder present in all parts of the world. It is manifested by craving and a general loss of control over the drug intake and the life situation, ultimately leading to compulsive use of the addictive drug at the expense of normal behavioral patterns.
