21. Muscular aging and its relation to physical activity and function : longitudinal and cross-sectional analyses
Sammanfattning : With age, muscle mass decreases and muscle function and strength decline, which is associated with loss of independence, hospitalization, morbidity and mortality. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the mechanisms involved in the age-related loss of muscle mass, physical function and strength by 1) studying gene expression and muscle morphology in muscle biopsies of vastus lateralis longitudinally (Study I) and muscle morphology cross-sectionally (Study II) in a cohort of older men, i. 22. Ion channels and intrinsic membrane properties of locomotor network neurons in the lamprey spinal cord
Sammanfattning : NMDA-receptor dependent membrane potential oscillations and postinhibitory rebound are examples of intrinsic membrane properties of many neurons of rhythm-generating networks, and are considered to play major roles in the operation of the spinal locomotor network of the lamprey vertebrate model. A significant feature of many lamprey spinal cord neurons is their ability to generate pacemaker-like membrane potential oscillations in the presence of the glutamate agonist NMDA. LÄS MER
23. Dopaminergic and serotonergic modulation of cellular and locomotor network properties in the lamprey spinal cord
Sammanfattning : Motor activity is the basis for all behavior. It is therefore important to study the processes generating movement such as the neuronal networks in the spinal cord that generates and controls locomotion. The lamprey is used as a model system for the study of locomotion. LÄS MER
24. Organization of the spinal locomotor network in zebrafish : pattern of recruitment and origin of excitatory drive
Sammanfattning : Locomotion is of vital importance for animals to survive in a complex environment. Locomotor movements are generated by neuronal networks that reside in the spinal cord and are composed of motoneurons and interneurons. LÄS MER
25. Neurotransmitter phenotypes of neurons in the spinal cord and their functional role in the mouse locomotor network
Sammanfattning : Walking is a special case of movement because it is rhythmic. An important area in current neuroscience research, is to better understand the different organizational levels (molecular, ion channels, neurotransmitters, connectivity etc.) that implement the function of rhythmic movements.
