  1. 1. Grow with the flow : Hydrological controls of riparian vegetation in boreal stream networks

    Författare :Lenka Kuglerová; Roland Jansson; Hjalmar Laudon; Birgitta Malm-Renöfält; John Stella; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; boreal forest; channelization; groundwater; Krycklan catchment; liverworts; mosses; riparian buffers; riparian vegetation; river restoration; species richness; stream network; stream size; vascular plants;

    Sammanfattning : What drives species diversity across landscapes is one of the most fundamental questions in ecology. Further, understanding the mechanisms underlying species diversity patterns is important not only for forming and challenging ecological theories but also essential for appropriate landscape management and effective nature conservation. 2. 2. Island biogeography of young land uplift islands - viewed through the lens of bryophytes in a northern Swedish archipelago

    Författare :Andreas Karlsson Tiselius; Mats Dynesius; Roland Jansson; Göran Englund; Joakim Hjältén; Tord Snäll; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; functional data analysis; metacommunity; isolation; mosses; liverworts; sporophyte production; dispersal-establishment trade-off; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany; Conservation Biology; naturvårdsbiologi; Statistics; statistik;

    Sammanfattning : Increasing habitat fragmentation and rapid global warming is changing the conditions for species populations and ecological communities around the world. This presents challenges for the maintenance of biodiversity and a dominant paradigm for conservation in fragmented habitats is given by island biogeography and metapopulation (or metacommunity) ecology. 3. 3. Aspects of heterogeneity : effects of clear-cutting and post-harvest extraction of bioenergy on plants in boreal forests

    Författare :Marcus Åström; Christer Nilsson; Katherine Frego; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :aspect; clear-cutting; disturbance; habitat quality; liverworts; logging residues; mosses; resilience; slash; slope; topography;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract. The objectives of this thesis are to evaluate (1) the influence of slope aspect on boreal plant responses to clear-cutting and (2) the effects of post-harvest extraction of bioenergy (logging residues or slash) on plant composition, richness and performance in clear-cuts. 4. 4. Plants go with the flow : predicting spatial distribution of plant species in the boreal forest

    Författare :Ursula Zinko; Christer Nilsson; Håkan Rydin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; boreal forest; vascular plant; species richness; wetness index; soil pH; bryophyte; lichen; substrate; stand age; plot size; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : The main objectives of this thesis are to study if a topographic wetness index (TWI) could be used as a tool for predicting the spatial distribution of vascular plant species richness in the boreal forest as well as to study congruence in species richness between vascular plants, liverworts, mosses and lichens. A wetness index ln(a/tanβ) based on topography was used to assign a specific TWI-value to every 20 x 20m grid in two 25 km2 boreal forest landscapes (differing in average soil pH) in northern Sweden. 5. 5. Functional analyses of growth and development in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha

    Författare :Anja Billhardt; D. Magnus Eklund; Marcel Quint; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Land plant evolution; Bryophytes; Marchantia polymorpha; Dormancy; Circadian clock;

    Sammanfattning : Land plants developed from a freshwater charophycean algae about 500 million years ago. Today, they consist of two main clades, the vascular plants and the non-vascular bryophytes including hornworts, liverworts and mosses. LÄS MER
