1. Lung function in alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency
Sammanfattning : Hereditary alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency predisposes to liver disease and emphysema. The aims of the studies upon which thesis is based were to investigate the natural course of lung function and risk factors for lung disease in AAT-deficient adolescents (PiZZ and PiSZ) and adults (PiZZ), and to study clinical manifestations in AAT-deficient adults. 2. Thyroid hormone receptors in liver metabolism
Sammanfattning : Thyroid hormone has a profound impact on mammalian metabolism; hypothyroidism causes decreased metabolic rate and increased serum cholesterol levels. One major target organ for the hormone is the liver, the most important metabolic organ in mammals, that balances anabolism of carbohydrates and lipids against catabolism. LÄS MER
3. Chronic hepatitis C infection. With special reference to prevalence, aggravating factors and longterm outcome
Sammanfattning : Since the discovery of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 1989, it has proved to be a formidable health problem with a major impact on morbidity and mortality throughout the world. In this investigation, patients with chronic hepatitis C infection have been studied with special reference to prevalence, aggravating factors and longterm outcome. LÄS MER
4. Alpha1-Antitrypsin: New insights into the biological role in vitro and in vivo
Sammanfattning : Alpha1-Antitrypsin (AAT), an acute-phase glycoprotein produced predominantly in the liver by hepatocytes, but also by macrophages, pulmonary alveolar cells and intestinal epithelial cells, is a member of the SERPIN superfamily (SERine Protease INhibitors), and is one of the major inhibitors of neutrophil elastase in human plasma. Although AAT plays a critical role in regulating inflammation by inhibiting neutrophil serine proteases, recent studies suggest that AAT exhibits much broader anti-inflammatory activity. LÄS MER
5. Structural and evolutionary studies of a lipocalin: the alpha1-microglobulin protein and its gene
Sammanfattning : a1-microglobulin is a small glycoprotein present in plasma and in tissues surrounding the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. a1-microglobulin is a member of the lipocalin protein family and exhibits several of the typical traits of a lipocalin; it binds an unknown ligand which causes the brown color of the protein, it forms complexes with various different proteins and there have been indications of the presence of a receptor for a1-microglobulin on T-lymphocytes.
