    Sammanfattning : Local perceptions and livelihood strategies have in this study been examined through extensive fieldwork in two villages in rural Pondoland in the former homeland Transkei in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. It draws from the experience of the Gogo people living in Mvumi in the semiarid zone of central Tanzania, an area with a long history of food shortages.     Sammanfattning : This anthropological study examines the complexity and importance of gender relations for livelihood activities and it looks at the way in which female- headed agricultural households in the Ethiopian highlands cope in an area renowned for livelihood vulnerability, drought and famine.
