1. The role of peridontitis and hepatocyte growth factor in systemic inflammation
Sammanfattning : An essential goal in addressing inflammation is the return of tissue to homeostasis. Persistent infections often cause prolonged response and accumulation of immune cells, inducing imbalance in pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators, tissue destruction, and chronic inflammation. 2. Functional characterisation of receptors for cysteinyl leukotrienes in smooth muscle
Sammanfattning : The cysteinyl leukotrienes (leukotriene C4, D4 and E4) have potent biological actions which significantly contribute to the airway obstruction in asthma. Several of these effects are blocked by drugs known as CysLT1-receptor antagonists, which have been introduced as new treatment for asthma. LÄS MER
3. Studies on the formation of leukotriene C4 and lipoxins from leukotriene A4 in human platelets
Sammanfattning : Human platelets lack 5-lipoxygenase activity, but possess enzymatic capacity to transform the unstable epoxide leukotriene (LT)A4 to the potent inflammatory agent LTC4 and lipoxins, a group of trihydroxylated tetraene-containing eicosanoids, which recently have been suggested to have an anti-inflammatory role. A novel pathway for the formation of lipoxin (LX)A4 via platelet lipoxygenation of SS,6R-diHETE and 5S,6S-diHETE, enzymatic/non-enzymatic hydrolysis products of LTA4, was discovered in human platelets. 4. Pro- and anti-inflammatory regulation of β2 integrin signalling in human neutrophils
Sammanfattning : The body is under constant attack from pathogens trying to slip by our immune defence. If the barrier is breached, invading pathogens enter the tissues and cause inflammation. During this process neutrophils, constituting the first line of defence, leave the bloodstream and seek out and kill the invading pathogens. LÄS MER
5. Experimental studies of lipid mediator modulation of airway responsiveness
Sammanfattning : Lipid mediators play an important role in responsiveness of the airways. The roles of prostanoids and leukotrienes in inducing airway inflammation and contraction are reasonably well established. LÄS MER
