  1. 1. The Role of Cyclooxygenase-2 in Models of Epilepsy and Traumatic Brain Injury : Effects of Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitors

    Författare :Tina Kunz; Tadeusz Wieloch; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Controlled cortical contusion injury; fluid percussion injury; limbic seizures; nuclear factor-kappa B; prostaglandin metabolism; TUNEL staining; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; farmaceutisk farmakologi; Pharmaceutical Pharmacology;

    Sammanfattning : Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) catalyses prostaglandin synthesis from arachidonic acid during inflammation. COX-2 is expressed in the normal brain and is induced in neurological disorders. There is evidence that COX-2 is involved in secondary events leading to cell death in the brain. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies on cellular changes and amnesia in a rat model of electroconvulsive therapy

    Författare :Linda Jansson; Lund Psykiatri; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; electroconvulsive seizures; angiogenesis; glial cell activation; amnesia; lithium;

    Sammanfattning : Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established treatment for severe depressive disorder, but its clinical use has been limited by concerns about side effects such as memory disturbances. Despite over 70 years in clinical use, the exact mechanisms of action behind the therapeutic or adverse effects are not fully understood. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Multimethodological imaging studies of pathophysiological mechanisms in human epilepsy

    Författare :Carolina Ciumas; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Although the pathophysiological mechanisms of human epilepsy are extensively investigated, many questions remain unanswered. One is whether idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGE) have anatomical substrates. Another is if the functional integrity of the limbic networks in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is impaired. 4. 4. Role of Neuropeptides and Neurotrophic Factors in Seizure Modulation

    Författare :Avtandil Nanobashvili; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; brain slice; entorhinal cortex; hippocampus; galanin; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor; neuropeptide Y; epilepsy; kindling; Neurology; neurofysiologi; neuropsykologi; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : The presented thesis explores role of glial cell line derived neurotrophic factor family receptor a2 (GFRa2), as well as neuropeptide Y (NPY) and galanin and their receptors in modulation of seizure activity. We demonstrate that mice lacking the GFRa2 gene (GFRa2-/-) exhibit suppressed seizure generalization in traditional and rapid kindling models. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Multimethodological brain imaging studies of human epilepsy

    Författare :Carolina Ciumas; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Although the pathophysiological mechanisms of human epilepsy are extensively investigated, many questions remain unanswered. One is whether idiopathic generalized epilepsies (IGE) have anatomical substrates. Another is functional integrity of the limbic networks outside the epileptogenic region in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). LÄS MER
