1. Fractionation of woody biomass : lignin and suberin in focus
Sammanfattning : This thesis is dedicated to the research of fractionation and valorization of different types of woody biomass. In the first part, oak (Quercus suber) and birch (Betula pendula) barks are considered. Bark is the outer layer of wood and is treated as waste in the current wood processing technologies. LÄS MER
2. Catalytic valorization of lignocellulose : Direct and sidestream upgrading approaches
Sammanfattning : This work aims to explore different approaches for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass. In this regard, two different strategies are presented: the catalytic upgrading of lignocellulose derivatives from industrial streams, such as pyrolytic oil and kraft lignin, and the direct catalytic fractionation of woody biomass. 3. Processing Lignocellulosic Biomass into Ethanol - Implications of High Solid Loadings
Sammanfattning : Fuel ethanol from lignocellulosic biomass has the potential to provide a sustainable replacement for traditional oil-based fuels. This dissertation assesses the processing of three different lignocellulosic materials – spruce, wheat straw and giant reed – at industrially relevant solid loadings. The work is divided into two main parts. LÄS MER
4. Enzymes for selective decoupling of woody biomass: From fundamentals to industrial potential
Sammanfattning : The need for an economy based on renewable materials has resulted in growing interest in the use of woody biomass in a wider field of application. However, the chemical complexity of lignocellulose and the dense structure of wood pose challenges in its processing. LÄS MER
5. Biorefining of lignocellulose : Detoxification of inhibitory hydrolysates and potential utilization of residual streams for production of enzymes
Sammanfattning : Lignocellulosic biomass is a renewable resource that can be utilized for the production of biofuels, chemicals, and bio-based materials. Biochemical conversion of lignocellulose to advanced biofuels, such as cellulosic ethanol, is generally performed through microbial fermentation of sugars generated by thermochemical pretreatment of the biomass followed by an enzymatic hydrolysis of the cellulose.
