1. The initial phase of sodium sulfite pulping of softwood : A comparison of different pulping options
Sammanfattning : Single stage and two-stage sodium sulfite cooking were carried out on either spruce, pine or pure pine heartwood chips to investigate the influence of several process parameters on the initial phase of such a cook down to about 60 % pulp yield. The cooking experiments were carried out in the laboratory with either a lab-prepared or a mill-prepared cooking acid and the temperature and time were varied. LÄS MER
2. Microwave-assisted transformations of lignin for value-added material applications
Sammanfattning : The chemical diversity and structural complexity of lignin, an abundant biopolymer found in vascular plants, present a multitude of opportunities for the modification and fine-tuning of its properties to suit downstream demands. In this thesis, microwave-assisted strategies were explored as efficient and environment-friendly pathways for lignin valorization towards value-added material applications. LÄS MER
3. Carbon Fibres from Kraft Lignin
Sammanfattning : Kraft lignin has a high potential for use in more valuable applications than its current use as fuel in pulp mills and integrated pulp and paper mills. The possibility of using kraft lignin, a green material with a carbon content of more than 60 %, for the manufacturing of carbon fibres was investigated in this thesis. LÄS MER
4. High strength paper from high yield pulps by means of hot-pressing
Sammanfattning : AbstractHigh Yield Pulp (HYP), i.e. TMP, SGW or CTMP, is normally used in printing papers (News, SC and LWC) or in a middle layer on cardboard i.e. LÄS MER
5. Valorization of low-value lignocellulosic side-streams
Sammanfattning : The development of novel pathways for valorizing low-value streams from pulp, forest, and agricultural industries is crucial for realizing a circular bioeconomy and addressing the needs of both platform chemicals and fuels. Utilizing hemicellulose and lignin as biomass-derived feedstocks facilitates the production of sustainable liquid hydrocarbons, with catalytic hydrodeoxygenation being a key process. LÄS MER
