  1. 1. Age-specific trade-offs in life-history evolution

    Författare :Martyna K. Zwoinska; Alexei Maklakov; Marjo Saastamoinen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; life history; trade-off; learning; aging; sex differences; dispersal; Caenorhabditis; Drosophila; Biologi med inriktning mot zooekologi; Biology with specialization in Animal Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Trade-offs prevent selection from driving all fitness-enhancing traits towards values that would maximize fitness. Life-history trade-offs, such as the one between survival and reproduction are well-studied, yet trade-offs can also involve behavioural or cognitive traits. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Physiological trade-offs in reproduction and condition dependence of a secondary sexual trait

    Författare :Måns S. Andersson; Victor Apanius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Trade-offs; life history; immune ecology; cost of reproduction; costs of immune response; sexual selection; migration; moult; Newcastle disease; HbA1C; Ficedula albicollis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines parental condition, how it is traded off against reproduction and how it is displayed in a secondary sexual trait. The studies were performed on nest-box breeding collared flycatchers Ficedula albicollis on the island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

    Författare :Asghar Muhammad; MEMEG; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Avian malaria; Plasmodium; qPCR; parasitemia; life history; reproduction; survival; feather growth; MHC; telomere length; heritability; telomere loss; fitness; wild population; Acrocephalus arundinaceus; Delichon urbica;

    Sammanfattning : Haemosporidia is a well-studied group of parasites, which infect mammals, reptiles and birds and use blood sucking vectors for their transmission. By conducting natural population studies and experimental infections, We have been able to detect and quantify Haemosporidia from avian blood to investigate how these pathogens affect their avian hosts. 4. 4. Avian malaria, life-history trade-offs and interspecific competition in Ficedula flycatchers

    Författare :Katarzyna Kulma; Anna Qvarnström; Marlene Zuk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Blood parasites; competitive asymmetry; immunocompetence; interspecific competition; life-history trade-offs; MHC; parasite-driven selection;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the impact of avian malaria (Haemosporidia) parasites on the outcome of interspecific competition between two closely related bird species, pied (Ficedula hypoleuca) and collared (F. albicollis) flycatchers. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Behavioural, physiological and morphological correlates of life-history in killifishes − a macroevolutionary approach

    Författare :Simon Eckerström-Liedholm; Alejandro Gonzalez Voyer; Björn Rogell; Alastair Wilson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; brain size evolution; comparative analysis; life-history continuum; risk-taking behaviour; sexual selection; trade-offs; etologi; Ethology;

    Sammanfattning : Life-histories commonly evolve along a continuum from short-lived and fecund, to long-lived and less fecund. Because life-history traits are mostly components of reproduction and survival, understanding the causes and consequences of life-history variation is at the core of evolutionary biology. LÄS MER
