  1. 1. Extensive green roofs in Porto Alegre, Brazil : Effect on indoor thermal comfort in residential buildings

    Författare :Lisandra Fachinello Krebs; Institutionen för arkitektur och byggd miljö; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Architecture; Computer simulations; Extensive green roofs; Housing projects; Indoor thermal comfort; Leaf area index; Microclimate; Social housing; Sustainability; Thermal comfort;

    Sammanfattning : Brazil had a significant quantitative housing deficit of 7.7 million residences in 2015, especially in low-income housing. Traditionally, these projects have low levels of thermal insulation which can result in discomfort caused by warmth or cold. The residential sector is responsible for a significant part of the energy use in Brazil. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Comparative morphological studies of fossil and living plane trees (Platanaceae) and oaks (Quercus): taxonomy, ecology, evolution

    Författare :Georg Florian Tschan; Thomas Denk; Ove Eriksson; Bertil Ståhl; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Platanaceae; Platanus; Credneria; Quercus; Galliferae; leaf architecture; epidermal anatomy; comparative morphology; character variation; variability; sample size; diversity patterns; species concepts; ecology; biogeography; evolution; plant fossils; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Morphological characters are essential for flowering plant identification, but also provide information about diversity patterns and ecological adaptation. In woody plant species, characters of the leaf are among the most useful and can be examined on fossils as well. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Plant-Herbivore Interactions and Evolutionary Potential of Natural Arabidopsis lyrata Populations

    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant defenses; leaf herbivory; floral herbivory; ontogeny; G-matrix; trade-offs; Biology with specialization in Ecological Botany; Biologi med inriktning mot ekologisk botanik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I combined field, greenhouse and common-garden experiments to examine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of plant-herbivore interactions and the genetic architecture of fitness-related traits in the insect-pollinated, self-incompatible, perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. More specifically, I examined (1) whether damage to leaves and inflorescences affects plant fitness non-additively, (2) whether trichome production is associated with a cost in terms of reduced tolerance to leaf and inflorescence damage, (3) whether young plant resistance to a specialist insect herbivore varies among populations, and (4) whether the evolution of flowering time, floral display and rosette size is constrained by lack of genetic variation or by genetic correlations among traits. 4. 4. Using systems genetics to explore the complexity of leaf shape variation in Populus tremula

    Författare :Barbara Terebieniec; Nathaniel Street; Chung-Jui Tsai; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Populus; Arabidopsis; systems biology; systems genetics; spatial transcriptomics ST ; single nucleotide polymorphism SNP ; Genome wide associations study GWAS ; expression GWAS eGWAS ; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Leaves are essential for sustaining humanity as they function as the energy and oxygen-producing organ of plants. Intensive research on physiological processes has contributed immensely to our understanding of the function of leaves. However, comparatively little is known about how leaf size and shape is determined. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards an integrated ecology through mechanistic modelling of ecosystem structure and functioning

    Författare :Thomas Hickler; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []

    Sammanfattning : Plant physiology, population dynamics and the structure and functioning of ecosystems are closely interrelated. However, these processes are often investigated independently within different subdisciplines of ecology. LÄS MER
