1. Biophysical studies of cell membrane receptors for the growth factors PDGP and EGF : Aspects on lateral and aggregation
Sammanfattning : When extracellular growth factors bind to their specific cell surface receptors, they elicit a cascade of biochemical events, including tyrosine kinase-mediated phosphorylation and changes in intracellular free ca2+, leading to cell differentiation and proliferation. However, direct effects of ligand-binding on the receptors are poorly understood. LÄS MER
2. Brash Ice and Level Ice Growth, Effects of Snow
Sammanfattning : Brash ice occurs due to frequent navigation in ice-infested waters, typically along established navigation tracks regularly maintained by icebreakers and harbors. The accumulation and consolidation of brash ice between two ship passages are influenced by meteorological factors including the cumulative freezing air temperatures, and the mechanical processes such as ice-breaking due to ship passages. 3. Rail Corrugation Growth on Curves
Sammanfattning : The development of periodic irregularities with distinct wavelengths (corrugation) on the low rail of small radius curves is studied through mathematical modelling, numerical simulations, field measurements and laboratory investigations. One year of monitoring of roughness on the low rail of a 120 m radius curve on the metro of Stockholm Public Transport (SL) showed severe growth of rail corrugation with wavelengths of about 5 cm and 8 cm. 4. Structural investigation and lateral growth of silicon carbide crystals
Sammanfattning : Today, most of the electronic device technology is based on Si as a semiconducting material. The demands from the industry of improved performance within smaller devices drives the silicon based devices to the limits imposed by nature and not by technology. To realize these demands new materials like silicon carbide (SiC) must be investigated. LÄS MER
5. Systemic fungal diseases in natural plant populations
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this thesis was to study interactions between systemic fungal diseases and perennial plants. Using the systemic rust Puccinia minussensis on the host plant Lactuca sibirica, and the rust Puccinia pulsatillae on the host plant Pulsatilla pratensis, this thesis focused on: (i) the effects of systemic diseases on their hosts (ii) host and pathogen responses to abiotic factors, (iii) the importance of life history strategies for understanding host-pathogen interactions, and (iv) the evolutionary consequences of living in close associations.
