  1. 1. Age and Constraints on Language Learning : First Language Retention and Second Language Acquisition in International Adoptees

    Författare :Gunnar Norrman; Emanuel Bylund Spångberg; Guillaume Thierry; Janet Werker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bilingualism; critical period; electroencephalography; event-related potentials; first language retention; international adoption; phonology; second language acquisition; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the influence of age of acquisition on the long-term second language development of international adoptees. Because age of acquisition typically coincides with the onset of bilingualism, the study of maturational age effects in second language acquisition has been empirically and conceptually entangled with changes in language input and use. 2. 2. A View from Language : Growth of language in individuals and populations

    Författare :Christer Johansson; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Scandinavia; psycho-linguistics; past tense; linguistic ecology; language variation; language change; language acquisition; evolution; epidemics; emergence; diffusion; connectionism; area linguistics; case; simulation; synthesis.; Linguistics; Lingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : The main question that this book tries to find answers to is what it is that makes language learnable. Language is one of the most complex human activities, but nearly 100% of humanity have learned a language in childhood. One answer could be that it is something in our brain that makes us learn language better than most other activities. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Specific language impairment: Neurophysiological studies of children and their parents

    Författare :Marianne Ors; Klinisk neurofysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; SPECT; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; N400; P300; P3; N1; ERPs; event-related brain potentials; children; developmental language delay; Specific language impairment; language disorder; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Specific language impairment (SLI) is commonly described as a condition where a child with otherwise normal development and hearing does not acquire language as expected. Children with SLI often have a family history of language disorders. The aetiology is poorly understood. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Brain anatomical correlates of perceptual phonological proficiency and language learning aptitude

    Författare :Mikael Novén; Allmän språkvetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prosody; word accent; MRI; language learning aptitude; cortical morphometry; diffusion kurtosis imaging;

    Sammanfattning : The present dissertation concerns how brain tissue properties reflect proficiency in two aspects of language use: the ability to use tonal cues on word stems to predict how words will end and the aptitude for learning foreign languages. While it is known that people differ in their language abilities and that damage to brain tissue cause loss of cognitive functions, it is largely unknown if differences in language proficiencies correlate with differences in brain structure.
