  1. 1. Modelling regional climate-vegetation interactions in Europe : A palaeo perspective

    Författare :Gustav Strandberg; Erik Kjellström; Qiong Zhang; Johan Nilsson; Hans Renssen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeoclimate; climate model; vegetation; vegetation changes; land-cover; changes; proxy data; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : Studies in paleoclimate are important because they give us knowledge about how the climate system works and puts the current climate change in necessary perspective. By studying (pre)historic periods we increase our knowledge not just about these periods, but also about the processes that are important for climatic variations and changes. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Changing land cover as a driver of surface water browning

    Författare :Martin Skerlep; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic matter; iron; land cover; browning; afforestation; biogeochemistry; spruce;

    Sammanfattning : Streams, rivers and lakes across wide areas of the Northern hemisphere have been subject to an increase in water color over the last decades. This increase, also known as browning, is a result of rising dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron (Fe) concentrations in the water. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Pollen-based quantitative reconstruction of land-cover change in Europe from 11,500 years ago until present - A dataset suitable for climate modelling

    Författare :Anna-Kari Trondman; Marie-José Gaillard; Chris Caseldine; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pollen data; REVEALS model; model testing; land vegetation; land-cover; Holocene; Europe;

    Sammanfattning : The major objective of this thesis was to produce descriptions of the land vegetation-cover in Europe for selected time windows of the Holocene (6000, 3000, 500, 200, and 50 calendar years before present (BP=1950)) that can be used in climate modelling. Land vegetation is part of the climate system; its changes influence climate through biogeophysical and biogeochemical processes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Environmental Assessments of Landscape Changes : Interdisciplinary studies in rural Tanzania

    Författare :Louise Simonsson; Lennart Strömquist; Annika Dahlberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geography; Environmental assessment; interdisciplinary methodology; landscape; perceptions; preferences; land; forest; miombo woodlands; resources; biodiversity; Tanzania; Geografi; Other earth sciences; Övrig geovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to show how biogeophysical and social processes are interlinked in landscape change, and to propose approaches for interdisciplinary environmental assessments (such as EIAs), concentrating on developing countries’ situations, and representation of findings from such studies. Landscape in its holistic sense is a very good concept and basis for intellectual and practical use in environmental dialogues. LÄS MER

  5. 5. From the sea to the land beyond : exploring plural perspectives on whaling

    Författare :Benedict E. Singleton; Rolf Lidskog; Michael Thompson; C.S.A. Kris van Koppen; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; whaling; Faroe Islands; ontological turn; cultural theory; the commons; political ecology; environmental conflict; environmental policy; conservation; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Sammanfattning : A perennial challenge in efforts to deal with environmental issues is the question of how to simplify. As such, where and when one simplifies is often a source of conflict, but perversely also paramount to finding a solution. This thesis focuses on one long-standing environmental issue, the whaling debate. LÄS MER
