1. Characterization of biological nanoparticles using evanescent field sensing
Sammanfattning : In light of the increasingly realized importance of nanoparticle-based biological processes, in biology as well as in technological applications, there is a need of analysis methods capable of accurately quantifying different characteristics and processes involving these elusive entities. The aim of this thesis is the development and utilization of surface-based bioanalytical sensing methods for quantitative characterization of biological nanoparticles, most of which being based on surface-confined evanescent-field illumination. 2. Towards specific quantification of exosomes using surface-based sensing
Sammanfattning : When exosomes were first observed in 1967, they were believed to be cell debris until extensive studies demonstrated key biological functionalities related to their composition and formation mechanism. Exosomes are nanometer-sized lipid vesicles of endocytic origin, with a membrane consisting of lipids and proteins and encapsulating a cargo composed of soluble proteins and genetic material. LÄS MER
3. Multiparametric Optical Characterization of Biological Nanoparticles using Evanescent Field Sensing
Sammanfattning : In light of the increasingly realized dependence of many biological functions on nanoscopic supramolecular assemblies, also including novel biotechnological applications, there is a need for advanced analysis methods capable of accurately quantifying different characteristics of these elusive entities. The prime aim of this thesis is the development and utilization of surface-based bioanalytical sensing methods for quantitative characterization of biological nanoparticles. LÄS MER
4. Novel Functionalized Nanopores for Plasmonic Sensing
Sammanfattning : Nanoplasmonic sensors offer a label-free platform for real-time monitoring of biomolecular interactions by tracking changes in refractive index through optical spectroscopy. However, other surface sensitive techniques such as conventional surface plasmon resonance offer similar capabilities with equal or even better resolution in terms of surface coverage. LÄS MER
5. Physical characterization of exosomes and other extracellular vesicles using surface-based sensing
Sammanfattning : Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are hundred of nanometer sized particles secreted by almost all cell types. Exosomes are one type of EVs today intensively investigated due to the increased evidence suggesting that they play important roles as communicating vehicles in a broad range of physiological processes, pathological conditions and disease diagnostics.
