  1. 1. Stress response and virulence in Vibrio anguillarum

    Författare :Barbara Weber; Debra L. Milton; James D. Oliver; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrio anguillarum; quorum sensing; Type VI secretion; stress response; virulence; skin colonization; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria use quorum sensing, a cell to cell signaling mechanism mediated by small molecules that are produced by specific signal molecule synthases, to regulate gene expression in response to population density. In Vibrio anguillarum, the quorum-sensing phosphorelay channels information from three hybrid sensor kinases VanN, VanQ, CqsS that sense signal molecules produced by the synthases VanM, VanS and CqsA, onto the phosphotransferase VanU, to regulate activity of the response regulator VanO. 2. 2. Links between stress, sleep, and inflammation : a translational perspective of resilience

    Författare :Heather L Rusch; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Most individuals will experience one or more extremely traumatic events during their lifetime. For the most part, humans are resilient and have a tremendous capacity to bounce back from hardships; however, for a critical minority, trauma can result in debilitating symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 3. 3. Signalling in plant mitochondria. Redox regulation of gene expression & characterisation of a pea nucleoside diphosphate kinase

    Författare :Martha L Escobar Galvis; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mitochondrial gene expression; redox; respiratory complex II; NDPK; protein interactions; heat-stress; Växtbiokemi; Plant biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : This work contributes to our understanding of mitochondrial responses to changing environmental conditions in plants. The first part of this thesis is focused in the study of redox regulation of mitochondrial gene expression. By using inhibitors, the redox state of the components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain was selectively affected. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Categorization Work in the Swedish Welfare State : Doctors and social insurance officers on persons with mental ill-health

    Författare :Maricel L Knechtel; Michael Allvin; Rafael Lindqvist; Sandra Torres; David Rosenberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; institutional categorization; institutional categories; street-level bureaucrats; discretion; sick leave; sick listing; diagnosis; mental illness; psychiatric diagnosis; moral work; deservingness; worthiness; medical sociology; work capability; medical certification; social insurance; vignette studies; discrimination; labeling; stickiness; social mechanisms; matching; screening; signaling; cognitive categorization; working conditions; conflicting demands; client processing; Human Service Organizations; work approach; primary health care; moral stress; Bayes; work capability; rationing; Sociologi; Sociology;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation contributes to the debate on street-level bureaucracy, which highlights how the decisions made by workers in public bureaucracies effectively become public policy. This debate has paid relatively little attention to the study of how professionals carry out their work by means of institutional categorization, a knowledge gap that this study helps to close. 5. 5. Kinase cascades in the regulation of glucose homeostasis

    Författare :Tatiana L Steiler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Skeletal muscle; insulin resistance; T2DM; hyperglycemia; high fat diet; glucose transport; PI3K-; MAPK- and AMPK-signaling pathways; AMPKgamma3;

    Sammanfattning : Therapeutic strategies to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) aim at improving muscle insulin sensitivity by either directly modulating, or bypassing defective insulin signaling. Insulin induces metabolic and gene regulatory responses via PI 3-Kinase (PI3K) and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways, respectively. LÄS MER
