1. Effects of created habitats on farmland biodiversity
Sammanfattning : Agricultural intensification has caused severe declines among biodiversity in European farmland over the last half century. The transformation of the agricultural landscape has led to reduced availability of key resources such as food, nesting habitat and shelter. LÄS MER
2. Tracing environmental change and human impact as recorded in sediments from coastal areas of the northwestern Baltic Proper
Sammanfattning : The eutrophication of the Baltic Sea due to increased anthropogenic nutrient loads during the 20th century is well documented and studied. However, in the Baltic Sea drainage area, humans have affected the environment longer than the environmental monitoring can provide data for. LÄS MER
3. Synchrotron-based In Situ Electron Spectroscopy Applied to Oxide Formation and Catalysis
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to address chemical reactions on surfaces. The presented work aims at the investigation of the relation between pressure and adsorbate surface structures during catalytic reactions. LÄS MER
4. Pathways to future cropland : Assessing uncertainties in socio-economic processes by applying a global land-use model
Sammanfattning : Global agricultural production almost tripled within the last five decades. The production increase wasbased on expanding cropland and pastures, as well as the intensification of agriculture, including increased use ofhigh yielding crop varieties, machinery, irrigation, artificial fertilisers, and pesticides. 5. Monitoring biodiversity in cultural landscapes: development of remote sensing- and GIS-based methods
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I explore the relationships between structural and compositional landscape properties, and species diversity, using remotely sensed data on a variety of spatial scales. The thesis shows that increased landscape heterogeneity, measured using environmental and spectral variables that were used both separately and combined, is generally positively related to plant species richness.
