Sammanfattning : The main theme of the thesis is an analysis of three texts by the Czech author Bohumil Hrabal (1914 – 1997), namely ’Mrtvomat’ (’Mrtvomat’, 1949), This City is in the Joint Care of Its Inhabitants (Toto mìsto je ve spoleèné péèi obyvatel, 1967), and ’Legend Played on Strings Stretched Between the Cradle and the Coffin’ (’Legenda zahraná na strunách mezi kolébkou a rakví’, 1968). These texts are compiled of segments, selected from the works of other authors and fragments of overheard conversations. LÄS MER
14. Portrait of a Villain: Laban the Aramean in Rabbinic Literature
Sammanfattning : This study attempts to answer the question of why Laban the Aramean, a rather harmless character as presented in the biblical text, is generally portrayed in rabbinic literature as a major enemy of Jacob and Israel. It is argued that the portrait of Laban as a villain developed as a result of rabbinic hermeneutics, and that the characteristics which are attributed to him in rabbinic literature were not arbitrarily chosen due to a particular interest in his person or a wish to endow him with a certain set of negative characteristics, but rather derive from interaction between the rabbis and the biblical text in a process where the rabbis filled in the gaps that they perceived in the biblical text and explained inconsistencies with material provided by the Bible itself and by material taken from their ideological code. Sammanfattning : This thesis in islamology shows how Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses (1988) examines questions concerning religion, nationality, race, and power, compromise and authenticity in a time when different global processes have created new ways of perceiving and relating to different traditions. It examines how The Satanic Verses portrays how people apprehend themselves and others when the conditions for these traditions are changing, and the potential threats of religious fundamentalism, nationalism and racism.
