16. Causal Combinatorics : Edges of the Characteristic Imset Polytopes
Sammanfattning : Explaining data in a concise and efficient manner has become increasingly important in today's society. This thesis pertains to the problem of finding causal links within data, and how that can be done from a mathematical perspective. Using the framework of graphical models has several advantages, from interpretability to efficiency. LÄS MER
17. Approaching Mathematical Discourse : Two analytical frameworks and their relation to problem solving interactions
Sammanfattning : The driving force of conducting the two studies presented in this thesis is to examine ways that conceptual understanding and problem solving could be part of mathematics teaching, and through that, part of students' mathematical knowledge. The specific aims of the thesis are: 1) to characterize the classroom discourse of two, apparently similar, problem solving courses in teacher education and 2) to discuss the possibilities of developing two analytical approaches - the communicational approach to cognition and the dialogical approach - used for studying mathematical discourse. 18. On Uniformly Random Discrete Interlacing Systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns uniformly random discrete interlacing particle sys-tems and their connections to certain random lozenge tiling models. In par-ticular it contains the first derivation of a relatively unknown universal scalinglimit, which we call the Cusp-Airy process, of certain lozenge tiling modelsat a cusp point. LÄS MER
19. Split Trees, Cuttings and Explosions
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on four papers investigating properties of split trees and also introducing new methods for studying such trees. Split trees comprise a large class of random trees of logarithmic height and include e.g., binary search trees, m-ary search trees, quadtrees, median of (2k+1)-trees, simplex trees, tries and digital search trees. 20. The Lorenz attractor exists
Sammanfattning : We prove that the Lorenz equations support a strange attractor, as conjectured by Edward Lorenz in 1963. We also prove that the attractor is robust, i.e., it persists under small perturbations of the coefficients in the underlying differential equations. LÄS MER
