11. Lipid peroxidation in vivo : Evaluation and application of methods for measurement
Sammanfattning : Lipid peroxidation is thought to be an important factor in the pathophysiology of a number of diseases and in the process of ageing, but its measurement in vivo has been difficult. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate methods for measurement of lipid peroxidation in vivo that are suitable for clinical investigations, and to apply these methods in animal and human studies investigating basal conditions and situations associated with increased lipid peroxidation. 12. Determination of biomarkers for lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress : Development of analytical techniques and methods
Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress can be defined as a state of disturbance in the pro-oxidant/antioxidant balance in favour of the former, leading to potential damage. Processes associated with oxidative stress involve reactive oxygen species and radicals and can result in elevated levels of oxidatively modified or toxic molecules that can cause cellular malfunction, and even cell death. 13. Quantification of inflammatory mediators to explore molecular mechanisms and sub-phenotypes of asthma
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarizes a series of studies using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry methodologies to quantify metabolites of fatty acids (i.e. LÄS MER
14. Lung mechanics and airway inflammation in murine models of asthma
Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and increased airway reactivity. In the studies presented in this thesis, lung mechanics and measurements of airway reactivity were assessed in anaesthetized tracheostomized mice by using an animal ventilator (flexiVent®). LÄS MER
15. Conjugated linoleic acid and the metabolic syndrome : Clinical and metabolic studies with special reference to insulin resistance, oxidative stress and inflammation
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in middle-aged men with the metabolic syndrome, a high-risk group for type 2 diabetes. CLA is a group of fatty acid isomers with antiobesity and antidiabetogenic effects in animals, and CLA is therefore used as a supplement in humans. LÄS MER
