  1. 11. Cadmium exposure and iron status

    Författare :Agneta Åkesson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :environmental exposure; biological monitoring; bioavailability; pregnancy; cadmium; iron deficiency; hemochromatosis; dietary intake; soluble transferrin receptor; serum ferritin;

    Sammanfattning : People are exposed to cadmium, a ubiquitous toxic metal, mainly via basic foods such as cereals and vegetables. Cadmium accumulates in the kidney, and renal tubular damage is considered the critical effect. Recently, association with osteoporosis at environmental exposure levels was indicated. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Oligomerization of human and bacterial frataxin : Structural and functional studies

    Författare :Mostafa Abdalkhalik; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :Frataxin; Friedreich’s ataxia; iron; reactive oxiden species; protein oligomerization; SAXS; EM; cross-linking; XAFS; nano- DSF;

    Sammanfattning : Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease caused by defeciency in frataxin, a highly conserved protein central to iron homeostasis in mirochondria. The function of frataxin is related to its capability to bind, store and deliver iron to different biochemical process such as iron-sulfur cluster assembly and heme biosynthesis. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Iron and zinc in infancy : results from experimental trials in Sweden and Indonesiaa

    Författare :Torbjörn Lind; Robert Black; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Public health; Folkhälsomedicin; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Epidemiology; epidemiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Iron and zinc are difficult to provide in sufficient amounts in complementary foods to infants world-wide, resulting in high prevalence of both iron and zinc deficiency. These deficiency states cause anemia, delayed neurodevelopment, impaired growth, and increased susceptibility to infections such as diarrhea and respiratory infections. LÄS MER

  4. 14. Relation of nutritional status, immunity, hemoglobinopathy and falciparum malaria infection

    Författare :Alice Nyakeriga; Marita Troye-Blomberg; Thomas Williams; Clara Menendez; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Iron deficiency; nutrition; anthropometric indexes; malaria; hemoglobinopathies; immunity; Immunology; Immunologi;

    Sammanfattning : The interaction between nutritional status and malaria disease is complex and often controversial. Nutritional deficiencies (macro- or micro-nutrient) are thought to lead to malnutrition with subsequent susceptibility to malaria infection. On the other hand severe malaria or repeated malaria infections lead to malnutrition. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Health and Nutrition in the Tarahumara of Northern Mexico : Studies among Women and Children

    Författare :Joel Monárrez-Espino; Ted Greiner; Gunilla Lindmark; Homero Martínez; Reynaldo Martorell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; International health; acculturation; anemia; anthropometry; body shape; cognitive anthropology; qualitative methods; ferritin; food; indian; infant feeding; malnutrition; Mexico; micronutrients; obesity; overweight; Raramuri; school children; Tarahumara; westernization; women; Internationell hälsa; Public health science; Folkhälsovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Belonging to an indigenous group in Mexico is usually associated with poor health, mainly as the result of social isolation from the mainstream society. The Tarahumara are no exception. They constitute the largest indigenous group in northern Mexico and one of the most marginalized ethnic minorities in North America. LÄS MER
