1. Regulation of vascular function by fluid mechanical forces. Development of a new vascular experimental platform for integrative physiological and molecular biological studies of living conduit vessels
Sammanfattning : The vascular endothelium is a multifunctional interface between blood flow and target organs and is continuously exposed to fluid mechanical forces such as shear stress, compressive, and tensile forces. Both in vivo and in vitro data indicate that biomechanical forces exert important modulating effects on key vascular functions. LÄS MER
2. Methodological studies of eicosanoid enzyme gene expression in vascular endothelium exposed to biomechanical stress
Sammanfattning : Prostaglandins are the major eicosanoids synthesized by vascular endothelial cells, and the vasculature is an important target organ for their bioactive metabolites. In vitro studies have shown that biomechanical forces are important regulators of vascular expression of prostanoid enzymes and release of metabolites. LÄS MER
3. Experimental studies of the regulations of synthesis and release of tissue-type plasminogen activator from vascular endothelium
Sammanfattning : The fibrinolytic system has several important functions and one crucial function is the prevention and removal of fibrin deposits in blood vessels. Tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) plays a key role in this process, and in vitro data suggest that an acute release of t-PA is induced as a thromboprotective response whenever clotting mechanisms are initiated. 4. Effects of Biomechanical Stress on Gene Regulation in Vascular Cells
Sammanfattning : The vascular vessel wall is constantly exposed to biomechanical forces, such as shear and tensile stress. Biomechanical forces are important for several physiological and pathological processes and have been shown to regulate a number of fundamental vascular functions, such as vascular tone and remodeling processes. 5. Intra-abdominal Hypertension and Colonic Hypoperfusion after Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
Sammanfattning : Colonic ischaemia (CI), Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) are devastating complications after abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) surgery. The aims of this thesis were to study the incidence and clinical consequences of IAH/ACS and the association between CI and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) among patients undergoing OR for ruptured AAA (rAAA), to compare extraluminal pHi monitoring, with standard intra-luminal monitoring among patients operated on for AAA, and to study the frequency and clinical consequences of IAH/ACS after endovascular repair (EVAR) for rAAA.
