1. Water and Protein Dynamics in Biological Systems Studied by Magnetic Relaxation Dispersion
Sammanfattning : The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that the magnetic relaxation dispersion (MRD) technique can provide information of relevance to protein biophysics, magnetic resonance imaging and cell biology. By immobilizing proteins with covalent cross-links, intermittent protein dynamics on the previously inaccessible ns-µs time scale could be probed with MRD via the exchange of water molecules between internal cavities and the surrounding bulk solvent phase. 2. Cell responses in infected and cystic fibrosis respiratory epithelium
Sammanfattning : Respiratory Epithelium. Örebro Studies in Medicine 99. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by a mutation in a cAMP-activated chloride (Cl-) channel (CFTR). Mortality and morbidity in CF is mainly due to the deregulated responses of the airway epithelial cells. LÄS MER
3. Volume kinetics of glucose solutions given by intravenous infusion
Sammanfattning : Fluid therapy is often cumbersome to plan since the distribution and the elimination of the administered solution are difficult to analyze in the clinical setting. The knowledge of the adequate rate and dose for each individual patient and under various physiological conditions would be very attractive to obtain in order to avoid fluid overload and hyperglycemia. 4. Characterization of artificial and biological lipid vesicles using TIRF and SPR
Sammanfattning : Synthetic lipid vesicles serve as important mimics of cells and the natural membranes that they are enclosed by. As such they are frequently used as simplified models of the highly complex cell membrane to aid in-depth physicochemical and biological characterization of this essential biological structure. 5. Structural Details of Human Aquaporin Regulation : Three stories of three aquaporins
Sammanfattning : Every cell is surrounded by a thin plasma membrane, protecting it from its surrounding. Specialized protein channels and transporters are embedded in this membrane, ensuring selective transport of molecules in and out of the cells. To maintain optimal hydration, water channels called aquaporins (AQPs) are present in every cell of our body. LÄS MER
