  1. 1. Water and Protein Dynamics in Biological Systems Studied by Magnetic Relaxation Dispersion

    Författare :Erik Persson Sunde; Biofysikalisk kemi; []
    Nyckelord :protein dynamics; ubiquitin; BPTI; Escherichia coli; Haloarcula marismortui; nuclear magnetic resonance; protein hydration; magnetic relaxation dispersion; water dynamics; cell water;

    Sammanfattning : The results presented in this thesis demonstrate that the magnetic relaxation dispersion (MRD) technique can provide information of relevance to protein biophysics, magnetic resonance imaging and cell biology. By immobilizing proteins with covalent cross-links, intermittent protein dynamics on the previously inaccessible ns-µs time scale could be probed with MRD via the exchange of water molecules between internal cavities and the surrounding bulk solvent phase. 2. 2. Cell responses in infected and cystic fibrosis respiratory epithelium

    Författare :Rashida Hussain; Godfried M . Roomans; Maria Björkqvist; Ferenc Karpati; Hans Kollberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; airway epithelial cells; cystic fibrosis; bacterial infection; CFTR; ENaC; chloride transport; intracellular calcium; P. aeruginosa internalization; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Respiratory Epithelium. Örebro Studies in Medicine 99. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by a mutation in a cAMP-activated chloride (Cl-) channel (CFTR). Mortality and morbidity in CF is mainly due to the deregulated responses of the airway epithelial cells. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Volume kinetics of glucose solutions given by intravenous infusion

    Författare :Fredrik Sjöstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Volume kinetics; osmosis; dehydration; rehydration; glucose solutions; glucose; hypovolemia; hypoglycemia; fluids; intravenous fluid therapy; fluid shifts; plasma volume; dilution; plasma dilution; intracellular hydration; central volume.;

    Sammanfattning : Fluid therapy is often cumbersome to plan since the distribution and the elimination of the administered solution are difficult to analyze in the clinical setting. The knowledge of the adequate rate and dose for each individual patient and under various physiological conditions would be very attractive to obtain in order to avoid fluid overload and hyperglycemia. 4. 4. Characterization of artificial and biological lipid vesicles using TIRF and SPR

    Författare :Thomas Olsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; membrane permeability; chromaffin vesicle; fluorescence; total internal reflection TIRF microscopy; surface plasmon resonance SPR ; vesicle; osmotic shock; cell membrane; liposome; nanoparticle tracking analysis NTA ; large dense core vesicles LDCVs ;

    Sammanfattning : Synthetic lipid vesicles serve as important mimics of cells and the natural membranes that they are enclosed by. As such they are frequently used as simplified models of the highly complex cell membrane to aid in-depth physicochemical and biological characterization of this essential biological structure. 5. 5. Structural Details of Human Aquaporin Regulation : Three stories of three aquaporins

    Författare :Veronika Nesverova; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquaporin; membrane proteins; protein trafficking; water channel; aquaporin 0; aquaporin 5; aquaporin 2; cryo-EM; protein phosphorylation; protein-protein interaction; aquaporin regulation; aquaporins;

    Sammanfattning : Every cell is surrounded by a thin plasma membrane, protecting it from its surrounding. Specialized protein channels and transporters are embedded in this membrane, ensuring selective transport of molecules in and out of the cells. To maintain optimal hydration, water channels called aquaporins (AQPs) are present in every cell of our body. LÄS MER
