11. Early detection of major surgical postoperative complications evaluated by microdialysis
Sammanfattning : Major abdominal surgery may be followed by postoperative complications, especially in the elderly and patients with co morbidities as diabetes mellitus and obesity. Some of the most feared complications as anastomotic leakage, abdominal infections, abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) and intestinal ischemia can lead to sepsis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) with high morbidity and mortality. 12. Clinical studies of RNA as a prognostic and diagnostic marker for disease
Sammanfattning : Technologies for RNA detection are evolving rapidly and gives an op-portunity for discovery of new markers for early detection of complex diseases. Today in clinical work we rely on signs and symptoms in com-bination with the measurement of protein levels for diagnosis. LÄS MER

14. Intestinal Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury - Pathophysiology as basis for novel treatment
Sammanfattning : Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) is not infrequent in the clinical situation and the intestinal barrier plays an important role in gut barrier function, preventing not at least septic complications and potentially the development of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Mechanisms of intestinal I/R induced gut epithelial and endothelial barrier dysfunction and remote organ dysfunction, as well as potential preventive and therapeutic modes of management were evaluated in the rat. 15. Acute Occlusion of the Superior Mesenteric Artery : Diagnosis and treatment
Sammanfattning : Acute occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) is a condition associated with high mortality and morbidity. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for acute SMA occlusion. LÄS MER
