1. EM Estimation in Phase Type Models
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four articles whose theme in common is the class of phase type distributions. In the first article an EM algorithm is presented to estimate the parameters of a phase type distribution of fixed order. Also, it is shown that the algorithm can be used to approximate other continuous distributions by phase type distributions. LÄS MER
2. Methods for interval-censored data and testing for stochastic dominance
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes four papers: the first three of them are concerned with methods for interval-censored data, while the forth paper is devoted to testing for stochastic dominance. In many studies, the variable of interest is observed to lie within an interval instead of being observed exactly, i.e. LÄS MER
3. Functional clustering methods and marital fertility modelling
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of two parts. The first part considers further development of a model used for marital fertility, the Coale-Trussell's fertility model, which is based on age-specific fertility rates. A new model is suggested using individual fertility data and a waiting time after pregnancies. LÄS MER
4. On efficient use of censored data and covariate factors in survival analysis and maintenance scheduling
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with survival analysis and maintenance scheduling, two important issues to achieve efficient use of different production systems. In survival analysis of failure time data, the survival function and the cumulative hazard function are important reliability characteristics. LÄS MER
5. Running-related injuries among recreational runners. How many, who, and why?
Sammanfattning : Background. It is important for improving and maintaining general health to engage in regular physical activity. A major barrier to retain in regular physical activity is quitting because of an injury. In running, one of the most practiced leisure-time physical activities on a global scale, injuries are unfortunately common. LÄS MER
