  1. 1. Monocytes, Tissue Factor and Heparin-coated Surfaces : Clinical and Experimental Studies

    Författare :Matilda Johnell; Agneta Siegbahn; Rolf Larsson; Jesper Swedenborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; monocytes; tissue factor; heparin-coated surfaces; coagulation; inflammation; thrombin; cytokines; cardiopulmonary bypass; biocompatibility; migration; chemotaxis; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with inflammatory response and activation of coagulation. Heparin coating of the CPB circuit is shown to improve the biocompatibility of the surface. The biological effects of a new heparin surface, the Corline Heparin Surface (CHS), prepared according to a new principle, have been studied. LÄS MER

  2. 2. CXCL16 and CD137 in atherosclerosis

    Författare :Dick Wågsäter; Allan Sirsjö; Ewa Ehrenborg; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; atherosclerosis; chemokine; cytokine; endothelial cells; inflammation; low-density lipoprotein; macrophages; scavenger receptor; smooth muscle cells; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a progressive inflammatory disease that is characterized by the accumulation of lipids, infiltrated cells and fibrous elements in large arteries. This thesis focuses on the molecular mechanisms behind foam cell formation and inflammation, two central processes in the development of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. On certain genetic and metabolic risk factors for carotid stenosis and stroke

    Författare :Pär Wanby; Lars Brudin; Martin Carlsson; Milita Crisby; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Carotid artery diseases; Carrier proteins; genetics; Cerebrovascular accident; Cerebrovascular disorders; Genetic predisposition to disease; Polymorphism; genetic; Medicine; Medicin; Medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA stenosis) in a Swedish community. The threonine (T) containing protein of the FABP2 A54T gene polymorphism has a greater affinity for long chain fatty acids (FFAs) than the alanine (A) containing protein. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as well as several of its risk factors. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate how lipids influence EDV in the vascular bed of the human forearm. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Left Ventricular Function in Elderly Men : Metabolic, Hormonal, Genetic and Prognostic Implications

    Författare :Johan Ärnlöv; Anders Waldenström; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction are major causes of morbidity and mortality. In this thesis, metabolic, hormonal, genetic and prognostic aspects of echocardiographically determined left ventricular function were investigated in a fairly large longitudinal population-based study of men.
