1. Monocytes, Tissue Factor and Heparin-coated Surfaces : Clinical and Experimental Studies
Sammanfattning : Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with inflammatory response and activation of coagulation. Heparin coating of the CPB circuit is shown to improve the biocompatibility of the surface. The biological effects of a new heparin surface, the Corline Heparin Surface (CHS), prepared according to a new principle, have been studied. LÄS MER
2. CXCL16 and CD137 in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a progressive inflammatory disease that is characterized by the accumulation of lipids, infiltrated cells and fibrous elements in large arteries. This thesis focuses on the molecular mechanisms behind foam cell formation and inflammation, two central processes in the development of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER
3. On certain genetic and metabolic risk factors for carotid stenosis and stroke
Sammanfattning : The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA stenosis) in a Swedish community. The threonine (T) containing protein of the FABP2 A54T gene polymorphism has a greater affinity for long chain fatty acids (FFAs) than the alanine (A) containing protein. LÄS MER
4. Lipids and Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation
Sammanfattning : Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease as well as several of its risk factors. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate how lipids influence EDV in the vascular bed of the human forearm. LÄS MER
5. Left Ventricular Function in Elderly Men : Metabolic, Hormonal, Genetic and Prognostic Implications
Sammanfattning : Heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction are major causes of morbidity and mortality. In this thesis, metabolic, hormonal, genetic and prognostic aspects of echocardiographically determined left ventricular function were investigated in a fairly large longitudinal population-based study of men.
