1. Infectious and inflammatory mechanisms in preterm birth and cerebral palsy
Sammanfattning : Background: International studies of women in preterm labor (PTL) and preterm pre-labor rupture of the membranes (pPROM) have shown a significant association between microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC), some cytokines and chemokines and preterm birth (PTB). These studies have been performed in countries with higher incidence of PTB than that in Sweden. LÄS MER
2. Rheumatoid arthritis as a modifier of periodontitis
Sammanfattning : Periodontitis is a chronic tissue-destructive condition in which the tooth-supporting collagen fibers of ligament and bone are broken down mainly by the host s overreactive immune inflammatory response. The relation between periodontitis and other chronic inflammatory destructive diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), has been dealt with in some studies because, in spite of their different etiologies, similar mechanisms of tissue destruction have been described in these conditions. 3. Immunomodulation and its effector mechanisms in atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arterial intima, characterized by cholesterol deposition, inflammation and fibrosis. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is related to both innate and adaptive immune responses, and modulation of immune reactions in animal models of atherosclerosis affects the progression of the disease. 4. Pharmacometric Evaluation of Biomarkers to Improve Treatment in Oncology
Sammanfattning : Cancer is a family of many different diseases with substantial heterogeneity also within the same cancer type. In the era of personalized medicine, it is desirable to identify an early response to treatment (i.e., a biomarker) that can predict the long-term outcome with respect to both safety and efficacy. 5. Antimicrobial and xenobiotic defence in the mammalian testis
Sammanfattning : Different mechanisms exist in the mammalian testis to protect the germ cells from autoimmune attack, invading microbes, and xenobiotic induced toxicity, which would otherwise be deleterious to the preservation of fertility. The general aim of this thesis was to study these testicular defence mechanisms, including the structural building blocks of the blood– testis barrier (BTB), antimicrobial peptides, proinflammatory cytokines and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins.
