  1. 1. Infectious and inflammatory mechanisms in preterm birth and cerebral palsy

    Författare :Bo Jacobsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; preterm birth; preterm labor; preterm prelabor rupture of membranes; intra-uterine infection; intra-amniotic inflammation; interleukin-6; interleukin-8; interleukin-18; monocyte chemotactic protein-1; cerebral palsy; antenatal risk factors; chorioamnionitis.;

    Sammanfattning : Background: International studies of women in preterm labor (PTL) and preterm pre-labor rupture of the membranes (pPROM) have shown a significant association between microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC), some cytokines and chemokines and preterm birth (PTB). These studies have been performed in countries with higher incidence of PTB than that in Sweden. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Rheumatoid arthritis as a modifier of periodontitis

    Författare :Letícia Algarves Miranda; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :periodontal disease; attachment loss; juvenile idiopathic arthrtitis; rheumatoid arthritis; interleukin-1β; interleukin-18; elastase;

    Sammanfattning : Periodontitis is a chronic tissue-destructive condition in which the tooth-supporting collagen fibers of ligament and bone are broken down mainly by the host s overreactive immune inflammatory response. The relation between periodontitis and other chronic inflammatory destructive diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), has been dealt with in some studies because, in spite of their different etiologies, similar mechanisms of tissue destruction have been described in these conditions. 3. 3. Immunomodulation and its effector mechanisms in atherosclerosis

    Författare :Charlotta Hjerpe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arterial intima, characterized by cholesterol deposition, inflammation and fibrosis. The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is related to both innate and adaptive immune responses, and modulation of immune reactions in animal models of atherosclerosis affects the progression of the disease. 4. 4. Pharmacometric Evaluation of Biomarkers to Improve Treatment in Oncology

    Författare :Ida Netterberg; Lena Friberg; Mats Karlsson; Elisabet I. Nielsen; Henrik Lindman; Amit Roy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometrics; Biomarkers; Oncology; Population PKPD Modeling; NONMEM; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Sammanfattning : Cancer is a family of many different diseases with substantial heterogeneity also within the same cancer type. In the era of personalized medicine, it is desirable to identify an early response to treatment (i.e., a biomarker) that can predict the long-term outcome with respect to both safety and efficacy. 5. 5. Antimicrobial and xenobiotic defence in the mammalian testis

    Författare :Mona-Lisa Strand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Different mechanisms exist in the mammalian testis to protect the germ cells from autoimmune attack, invading microbes, and xenobiotic induced toxicity, which would otherwise be deleterious to the preservation of fertility. The general aim of this thesis was to study these testicular defence mechanisms, including the structural building blocks of the blood– testis barrier (BTB), antimicrobial peptides, proinflammatory cytokines and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins.
