6. Utilizing Problem Structure in Optimization of Radiation Therapy
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, optimization approaches for intensity-modulated radiation therapy are developed and evaluated with focus on numerical efficiency and treatment delivery aspects. The first two papers deal with strategies for solving fluence map optimization problems efficiently while avoiding solutions with jagged fluence profiles. LÄS MER
7. Photon and electron transport calculations for development of intensity modulated radiation therapy
Sammanfattning : .... LÄS MER
8. Development of optimized radiation therapy using external electron and photon beams
Sammanfattning : The development of new intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques and treatment optimization tools makes it desirable to further improve modulation methods by using scanned photon and electron beams. It is shown that the narrowest possible photon beams have the potential to improve the flexibility in dose delivery, speed up the dose delivery and improve the treatment outcome. LÄS MER
9. Development of a Whole Body Atlas for Radiation Therapy Planning and Treatment Optimization
Sammanfattning : The main objective of radiation therapy is to obtain the highest possible probability of tumor cure while minimizing adverse reactions in healthy tissues. A crucial step in the treatment process is to determine the location and extent of the primary tumor and its loco regional lymphatic spread in relation to adjacent radiosensitive anatomical structures and organs at risk. 10. Out-of-field doses from proton therapy and doses from CBCT imaging : Risk of radiation-induced second cancer from modern radiotherapy
Sammanfattning : The use of ionizing radiation for treatment of cancer diseases is continuously increasing as patient survival is improving and new treatment techniques are emerging. While this development is beneficial for curing primary tumors, concerns have been raised regarding the unwanted dose contribution to healthy tissues of patients and the associated risk of radiation-induced second cancer (RISC).
