16. Mutations and migration : molecular and epidemiological aspects of HIV-1 in Sweden
Sammanfattning : The Swedish HIV-1 epidemic is characterized by a wide variation in subtypes due to migration and travel. The aims of this thesis were to investigate molecular methods for estimating time to diagnosis and epidemiological tools for estimating the proportion of undiagnosed individuals with HIV-1 in Sweden, as well as to update the knowledge on transmitted and pre-treatment drug resistance (TDR and PDR) among persons living with HIV-1 in Sweden. 17. Dynamics of drug-resistant minor viral populations and phenotypic drug susceptibility in diverse HIV-1 subtypes
Sammanfattning : Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly reduced mortality in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, both in high- and low/middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the development of drug resistance following exposure to subtherapeutic concentrations of antiretrovirals (ARV) and transmitted drug resistance mutations (DRM) adversely affects the outcome of ART. 18. Molecular characteristics of HIV-1 subtype C and its impact on therapeutic outcome in Ethiopia
Sammanfattning : HIV-1 is characterized by a high genetic diversity which poses several challenges and implications with regard to disease progression, drug resistance and outcome of antiretroviral therapy (ART). HIV-1 subtype C (HIV-1C) is the most rapidly expanding subtype accounting for half of the global disease and nearly all infections in Ethiopia, Southern Africa and India which are the regions with the highest burden of HIV-1 infection. 19. Lactobacillus mediated targeting of gastrointestinal pathogens
Sammanfattning : The mucosal membranes of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and respiratory tract are the main targets for infection in the human body and are repeatedly challenged by pathogens. Passive immunization using delivery of antibodies at the mucosal membrane may thus provide a new first line of defense against these pathogens. LÄS MER
20. Inferring transmission dynamics from HIV-1 genealogies
Sammanfattning : With a national prevalence of 4.9% in the adult population, the HIV-1 epidemic in Kenya is the fifth largest in the world. LÄS MER
