21. Diabetic osteopathy : a study in the rat
Sammanfattning : The present study on non-obese Goto-Kakizaki (GK) rats with type-2 diabetes and neuropathy was an attempt to describe and define pertinent features of diabetic osteopathy. Altogether, the study included 33 GK rats aged 12 and 20 months, and 36 age-matched Wistar rats as controls. LÄS MER
22. Action and interaction of growth factors and regulatory molecules in vascular cells : With special reference to the IGF-I-system
Sammanfattning : Vascular function is greatly influenced by growth factors and regulatory molecules that can interact with each other in a complex pattern in the vascular wall. In this thesis we studied how different substances of special interest in the pathogenesis of vascular disease interact and regulate each other's expressions in endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). 23. The IGF-axis in liver disease : modulation of expression by histone deacetylase inhibitors
Sammanfattning : The Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis is composed of a family of ligands, receptors and binding proteins with important functions in the regulation of cell growth, apoptosis, survival, migration and development. The liver is a major provider of several of the IGF-axis members. LÄS MER
24. Exposures in utero and chronic disease : an alternative methodological approach
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to evaluate maternal and birth characteristics as risk factors for breast cancer and cardiovascular disease later in life, and to assess maternal serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factors in pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia. Birth characteristics and risks of breast cancer were studied in a case-control study nested within the population-based Swedish Twin Register (Paper 1). LÄS MER
25. Expression and function of IGF-I and insulin receptors in human micro- and macrovascular cells
Sammanfattning : Insulin-like growth factor and insulin are phylogenetically closely related polypeptides and have large structural and biological similarities. Low circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), diabetes as well as insulin resistance have been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms involved are still not clear.
