16. Liver regeneration : With reference to malnutrition and growth factors
Sammanfattning : The liver has a unique capacity to regenerate after damage, irrespective of cause. The regulatory mechanisms of this regeneration are not fully known. Liver regeneration· is associated with rapid growth and thereby increased demands for energy and synthesis of new compounds. LÄS MER
17. Growth Hormone and Gender. Studies in Healthy Adults and in Patients with Growth Hormone Disorders
Sammanfattning : The use of a new, more sensitive immunoassay for growth hormone (GH) revealed that the serum levels in men were lower than expected in sera drawn ambulatory in the morning after an overnight fast and that the gender difference was more than 10 times greater than reported. These observations led to a more thorough study on the impact of gender and sex steroids on the levels of GH and other hormones in ambulatory morning samples and over a 24-hour period. LÄS MER
18. Inflammation and the Insulin-like Growth Factor System at Very Preterm Birth. Implications for Early Morbidity and Development
Sammanfattning : The intention of this thesis was to evaluate the effects of inflammation at very preterm birth on subsequent morbidity, as well as on the neuro-protective IGF-system. Prospective clinical studies of very preterm infants constituted a base for the evaluation. LÄS MER
19. Insulin-like growth factor-II : cellular effects through different receptors
Sammanfattning : Insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II) and IGF-I are single-chain polypeptides structurally homologous to proinsulin and share similarities with insulin in functional characteristics. Cellular actions of IGF-II are generally thought to be mediated through the IGF-I or insulin receptors, but not the IGF-II receptor, which is a single chain protein, identical to the cation independent mannose 6-phosphate (M6P) receptor and responsible for lysosomal enzyme targeting and degradation of IGF-II. 20. The growth hormone receptor and growth hormone sensitivity in man
Sammanfattning : It is well established that the response to endogenous and exogenous growth hormone (GH) varies between individuals. For example, conditions with increased catabolic rate, such as trauma, sepsis and surgery, are believed to be associated with acquired GH insensitivity. LÄS MER
