11. Interplay between hormones, nutrients and adipose depots in the regulation of insulin sensitivity : an experimental study in rat and human adipocytes
Sammanfattning : Obesity and specifically central obesity is related to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and other components of the so-called metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to elucidate the interplay between hormones, nutrients and adipose depots in normal and insulin-resistant fat cell metabolism. LÄS MER
12. Novel insights into the regulation of insulin secretion by GLP-1, GIP and glucagon
Sammanfattning : There are many contributing factors to the development of type 2 diabetes, however, failure of beta-cells to sufficiently secrete insulin is the key component. The underlying mechanism of beta-cell failure is not fully established. In this thesis, we examined the role of high glucagon levels, i.e. LÄS MER
13. Muscle Morphology and the Insulin Resistance Syndrome : A Population-Based Study of 70 Year-Old-Men in Uppsala
Sammanfattning : Skeletal muscle accounts for the largest part of insulin-mediated glucose uptake. Insulin resistance (IR) is the main component of insulin resistance syndrome (IRS) and is an essential cause of a number of cardiovascular risk factors. LÄS MER
14. Early perturbations in lipid metabolism in insulin resistance
Sammanfattning : Subjects with the Metabolic Syndrome with or without type 2 diabetes are at excess risk for developing cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms are still not completely understood. Resistance to insulin-stimulated glucose uptake is associated with several metabolic and hemostatic risk factors for cardiovascular disease. LÄS MER
15. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome
Sammanfattning : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70.
