  1. 11. Long-term development, modeling and management of nutrient loading to inland and coastal waters

    Författare :Amelie Darracq; Georgia Destouni; Andrea Rinaldo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Nutrients; catchments; environmental management; climate change; population and lifestyle development; subsurface-surface water interactions; long-term simulations; nutrient retention; modeling; hydrology; transport processes; biogeochemistry; scaling; transport and reaction rates; Physical Geography; geografi med naturgeografisk inriktning;

    Sammanfattning : Environmental and water system protection and restoration require accurate knowledge and quantification of waterborne pollutant transport, retention-release and transformation processes taking place in the subsurface, river, lake and sea water systems, and at the interfaces between these systems. This thesis investigates the importance of spatial model resolution for such quantification and the possible long-term nutrient load development under different human perturbations and nutrient source management scenarios in the Swedish Norrström drainage basin, based on simulations with the GIS-based dynamic nutrient transport-attenuation model POLFLOW. 2. 12. The role of freshwater phytoplankton in the global carbon cycle

    Författare :Fabian Engel; Gesa A. Weyhenmeyer; Don Pierson; Katrin Attermeyer; John A. Downing; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; carbon dioxide; lake; river; global limnology; spatial scale; carbon budget;

    Sammanfattning : Water flowing through the landscape transports chemical substances including carbon. Along the way from upland soils to the ocean, carbon is transformed from organic carbon into inorganic carbon and vice versa. One such carbon transformation process is the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the water phase by phytoplankton. LÄS MER

  3. 13. Factors influencing the biogeography of bacteria in fresh waters - a metacommunity approach

    Författare :Jürg Brendan Logue; Eva S. Lindström; Silke Langenheder; Lars Tranvik; Byron Crump; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteria; diversity; richness; community composition; dispersal; metacommunity; fresh water; biogeography; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : One of ecology’s primary goals is to comprehend biodiversity and its patterns of distribution over space and time. Since microorganisms play a pivotal role in key ecological processes, the diversity of microbial communities may have important implications for the stability and functioning of Earth’s ecosystems. 4. 14. Impact of hydropower regulation on river water geochemistry and hyporheic exchange

    Författare :Dmytro Siergieiev; Hjalmar Laudon; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; regulated river; hyporheic zone; hydraulic conductivity; clogging layer; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Sammanfattning : Hydropower regulation of rivers exhibits a threat to the riverine ecosystems. Fragmentation of flow, landscape disturbances, and water retention are key features of regulated catchments, resulting in reduced floods and geochemical tr¬ansport, non-natural water level fluctuations, and thus disturbed exchange between the river and the aquifer. 5. 15. Estimating the Air-Water Gas Transfer Velocity during Low Wind Conditions

    Författare :Sam Fredriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Air.sea gas exchange; Turbulence; Heat flux; Natural convection; Shear; Direct numerical simulations; Gas transfer velocity; IR; Flux-chambers;

    Sammanfattning : The abundances of atmospheric carbon dioxide, CO2, and methane, CH4, are increasing. These increases affect e.g., the global carbon cycle and the climate both regionally and globally. LÄS MER
