1. Injuries among the elderly : study of fatal and non-fatal injury events
Sammanfattning : In view of the expected increase in the proportion of elderly in the population in most western countries, we studied injuries among the elderly (>60 years) by investigating hospital-treated injuries in inpatients and outpatients, and fatal injuries.One-year Hospital Injury Data - Even though the elderly made up only 15% of the injured in one year, they accounted for 42% of the total cost of trauma medical care, showing that injuries among the elderly place a disproportional burden on the health care system. 2. Rethinking Injury Events. Explorations in Spatial Aspects and Situational Prevention Strategies
Sammanfattning : This dissertation employs a holistic approach to injuries in everyday settings. It examines spatial aspects of adolescents’ injury events in residential situations, school situations, and suicidal situations, seeking to throw light on any reciprocal influence between situated activity and the physical environment in such events. 3. Clinical Consequences of Axonal Injury in Traumatic Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : Traumatic brain injury (TBI), mainly caused by road-traffic accidents and falls, is a leading cause of mortality. Survivors often display debilitating motor, sensory and cognitive symptoms, leading to reduced quality of life and a profound economic burden to society. LÄS MER
4. Injury-Induced Signalling in Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells
Sammanfattning : The vascular wall is an active, elastic and integrated organ made up of cellular and extracellular matrix (ECM) components. It is not a static organ; the components dynamically change and reorganize in response to physiological and pathological stimuli. Vascular injury induces a complex healing process, analogous to generalised wound healing. LÄS MER
5. Injury-induced activation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Role of specific gene expression and intracellular signalling pathways
Sammanfattning : Migration and proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMC) are important events in the development of atherosclerosis and restenosis following angioplastic surgery. It is important to gain further knowledge about the mechanisms regulating SMC form and function in order to understand the underlying disease process. LÄS MER
