1. Parkinson’s disease : the prodromal phase and consequences with respect to working life
Sammanfattning : Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common, progressive neurodegenerative disorder, recognized by the motor symptoms of bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity, and postural impairment. At clinical onset, extensive amounts of dopaminergic neurons have already been lost. LÄS MER
2. Falls in older community-dwelling women and men : risk factors and safety strategies. Fall risk awareness, fear of falling, and preferred exercise properties from a gender perspective
Sammanfattning : Background Falls are the leading cause for non-fatal injuries in older community-dwelling people. Compared to men, women fall more often, experience more fall-related injuries, and report fear of falling (FoF) more often. Falls may be prevented with specific exercises, but adherence is often low in long-term. LÄS MER
3. Predictors and consequences of injurious falls among older adults : a holistic approach
Sammanfattning : The field of research on falls among older adults is well studied. Despite this, there are some knowledge gaps that need to be addressed: 1) research studying injurious falls, as opposed to any falls; 2) knowledge on sex differences, and specific risk profiles for injurious falls; 3) development of an effective screening tool for community-dwelling older adults, that can detect people at risk of first-time falls, who may be targeted by preventive interventions; and 4) what factors influence the risk of losing independence, in a long-term perspective, after an injurious fall. 4. Injurious falls in older adults : early identification of individuals at risk of falls—from observational studies to implementation
Sammanfattning : Falls among older adults is a rapidly growing research field with still remaining knowledge gaps that need to be addressed. Most available screening tools for falls have been developed for older adults in specific care settings and screening tools for injurious falls are particularly scarce. LÄS MER
5. Falls, fear of falling and falls self-efficacy among adults with multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Although falls are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults and increasingly recognized as threat to the wellbeing of people living with chronic neurological conditions, fall prevention research involving people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is just emerging. The overall aim of this thesis was to generate new knowledge about fear of falling (FoF), fall-related injuries, and falls self-efficacy among middle aged and older adults with MS to inform development of occupational therapy interventions.
