1. Eating difficulties in elderly, focusing on patients with stroke
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to describe eating difficulties and interventions to improve eating among elderly patients, especially those with stroke, to make comparisons between patients with dysphagia and those without (Papers I & II), those with and without assisted eating (Paper IV), and to analyse the relation between eating difficulties, nutritional status (Papers II-V), pressure ulcers (Paper IV), length of hospital stay and levels of independent living when discharged (Paper V). Eating difficulties were mainly assessed using structured observations. LÄS MER
2. Conceptual Design of Propulsion Systems for Boundary Layer Ingestion
Sammanfattning : To reduce the climate impact of aviation new aircraft and engine concepts as well as improved design methods are needed. In this thesis, two fronts are explored. The first concerns improved methods for the conceptual design of the engine. LÄS MER
3. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton
Sammanfattning : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. LÄS MER
4. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics
Sammanfattning : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). 5. DNA lesions and carcinogenicity from the urban air pollutants 2- and 3-nitrobenzanthrone
Sammanfattning : In the early 1990's, Japanese doctors in urban areas discovered an increasing incidence of lung cancer among women, which was not attributed to a change in diet or smoking. This led to a growing investigation of urban air, and subsequently the discovery of 3-nitrobenzanthrone (3-NBA), a pollutant originating from diesel emissions. LÄS MER
