1. Biocatalyst Engineering: Metabolic Engineering, Kinetic modeling and metagenomics applied to industrial biotechnology
Sammanfattning : Industrial biotechnology has been defined as the use and application of biotechnology for the sustainable processing and production of chemicals, materials and fuels. It makes use of biocatalysts such as microbial communities, whole-cell microorganisms or purified enzymes. LÄS MER
2. Microbial strategies for deconstruction of bark components
Sammanfattning : Bark is the outermost part of a tree, and it is a protective layer against external threats such as microorganisms and environmental stressors. Bark consists of various polymers including lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and it also contains a large fraction of compounds known as extractives. LÄS MER
3. Influence of electrode material and stochastic factors on the performance and microbial community assembly in microbial electrochemical systems
Sammanfattning : Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are systems with microbial communities in the form of biofilms on electrode surfaces. The electrogenic bacteria in the anode biofilm act as catalysts for the oxidization of organic compounds, leading to release of electrons, generation of electrical current, and production of hydrogen and methane at the cathode. 4. Insights to beachcast management on Gotland, Sweden : An Industrial Ecology perspective on waste-resource ambiguity
Sammanfattning : Beachcast or beach wrack, washed-up algae and seaweed, used to be a highly sought-after agricultural resource (fertiliser and soil conditioner) in coastal communities around the world before being replaced by chemical fertilisers, but considering the talks of a circular bio-economy – can we reintroduce it? Since the abandonment of beachcast in agriculture, the amount of beachcast has significantly increased as an effect of eutrophication caused by the use of chemical fertiliser, and the material is commonly considered waste. Meanwhile, soils have degraded and need the multiple positive effects on agroecosystems that beachcast could provide. LÄS MER
5. Biosensor-based Methods for Detection of Microcystins as Early Warning Systems
Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria blooms are a water menace since they produce potent toxins that have been implicated in poisonings and deaths of humans and animals after consumption or contact with cyanotoxin-contaminated water. Of particular concern are cyanotoxins called microcystins, which are hepatotoxic cyclic peptides known to promote development of liver tumors in humans and animals. LÄS MER
