  1. 1. Salt-inducible kinases in adipose tissue

    Författare :Johanna Sernevi Säll; Proteinfosforylering; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; salt-inducible kinase; SIK; SIK2; fettväv; fettceller; insulinsignalering; glukosupptag; fetma; insulinresistens; salt-inducible kinase; SIK; SIK2; adipose tissue; adipocytes; insulin signalling; glucose uptake; obesity; insulin resistance;

    Sammanfattning : Obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are metabolic diseases that increase rapidly in the modern society. The underlying mechanisms are complex and involve both environmental and genetic factors. Adipose tissue is an important organ for maintaining whole body energy homeostasis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Plant Inducible Responses to Damage: Evolution and Ecological Implications

    Författare :Johannes Järemo; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; herbivory; inducible defences; compensation; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Inducible plant responses to damage, i.e. inducible defence responses and compensatory growth responses, are theoretically examined in an evolutionary and ecological context. Inducible defences are generally considered to be beneficial under conditions of low risk of herbivory and when initial damage is moderate. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Författare :Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis. 4. 4. Adenovirus vector systems permitting regulated protein expression and their use for in vivo splicing studies

    Författare :Magnus Molin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Adenovirus; vector; inducible; gene expression; ASF SF2; splicing; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Medical Virology; medicinsk virologi;

    Sammanfattning : We have constructed two adenovirus-based gene expression vector systems permitting regulated protein expression. They are based on the tetracycline-regulated Tet-ON- and the progesterone antagonist RU 486-regulated gene expression systems, which were rescued into E1-deficient adenovirus vectors. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Defence on Demand : A physiological perspective on phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator traits

    Författare :Jerker Vinterstare; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phenotypic plasticity; inducible defences; stress physiology; cortisol; immune function; trade-offs; sexual dimorphism; crucian carp; visual ecology; predator-prey interactions; POMC pro-opiomelanocortin ; colour change; eco-immunology; Anti-predator defences; Inducible morphological defence; Phenotypic plasticity; Stress physiology; Cortisol; Immune function; Crucian carp; Predator-prey interactions; Trade-offs; Sexual dimorphism; POMC; Pro-opiomelanocortin; Visual ecology; Eye evolution; Melanin; Eco-immunology; Pace-of-life; Behavioural plasticity;

    Sammanfattning : Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. LÄS MER
