  1. 1. Mine the Gaps : Evolution of Eukaryotic Protein Indels and their Application for Testing Deep Phylogeny

    Författare :Pravech Ajawatanawong; Sandra Baldauf; James McInerney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; indel; insertion deletion; protein evolution; bioinformatics; non-bilateria; eukaryotes; phylogeny; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Insertions/deletions (indels) are potentially powerful evolutionary markers, but little is known about their evolution and few tools exist to effectively study them. To address this, I developed SeqFIRE, a tool for automated identification and extraction of indels from protein multiple sequence alignments. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Bioinformatic Analysis of Mutation and Selection in the Vertebrate Non-coding Genome

    Författare :Mikael Brandström; Hans Ellegren; Diethard Tautz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Biology; non-coding genome; selection; mutation; chicken; human; indel; microsatellite; sequence alignment; comparative genomics; bioinformatics; vertebrate; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : The majority of the vertebrate genome sequence is not coding for proteins. In recent years, the evolution of this noncoding fraction of the genome has gained interest. These studies have been greatly facilitated by the availability of full genome sequences. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Using SNPs to study complex genetic disease : a population and evolutionary genetics perspective

    Författare :Sara Lynn Sawyer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Single nucleotide polymorphisms; population genetics; natural selection; genetic variation; haplotypes; linkage disequilibrium; genotyping methods;

    Sammanfattning : Associating genes to complex genetic diseases has proven more difficult than anticipated. Many genetic variants contribute small effects towards an individual's disease predisposition in polygenic diseases, and this biological complexity requires new methods of analysis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Genetic Variation and Expression of the IRF5 Gene in Autoimmune Diseases

    Författare :Gudlaug Thora Kristjansdottir; Ann-Christine Syvänen; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnel Nordmark; Unnur Þorsteinsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Sammanfattning : The interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) gene encodes a transcription factor that plays an important role in the innate as well as in the cell-mediated immune response. The IRF5 gene has received considerable attention since it was shown to be associated with two autoimmune diseases; systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Variation in length of proteins by repeats and disorder regions

    Författare :Rauan Sagit; Arne Elofsson; Andrey Kajava; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protein length; repeats; domain repeats; protein evolution; duplication; tandem duplication; intrinsic disorder; intrinsically disordered; variation in length; insertion; deletion; recombination; expansion; contraction; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Protein-coding genes evolve together with their genome and acquire changes, some of which affect the length of their protein products. This explains why equivalent proteins from different species can exhibit length differences. LÄS MER
