  1. 1. Early life stages of brown trout - Anti-predator responses under warming winters

    Författare :Karl Filipsson; Eva Bergman; Ann Erlandsson; Johan Watz; Martin Österling; Neil Metcalfe; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; behaviour; climate; cortisol; development; egg incubation; embryo; gene expression; ice; light; mRNA; piscivorous; poikilotherm; salmonid; stress; temperature; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : During winter, juvenile salmonids in boreal streams are vulnerable to predation, mainly from mammals and birds. Encounters with terrestrial predators can be reduced or avoided if fish limit activity to the darker periods of the day or to periods with surface ice. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Parental and embryonic behaviours in precocial birds

    Författare :Irene Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; pheasants; growth rate; oxygen consumption; hatch synchronization; incubation behaviour; nest predation; physical condition; Egg laying; primary sex ratio; mallards; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with behaviours during reproduction in precocial birds, both from the perspective of the female and of the embryos. Female pheasants in good physical condition laid larger eggs and produced a higher proportion of daughters than females in poor condition. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Effects of commercial hatchery processing on behaviour and welfare of laying hens

    Författare :Louise Hedlund; Per Jensen; Charlotta Berg; Bas Rodenburg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Around the world, more than 76.7 million tons of eggs are consumed every year. To meet this demand, billions of laying hen chicks are produced under highly industrial circum-stances. These chicks are hatched in commercial hatcheries for laying hens in a presumably stressful environment, which might affect their welfare and production later in life. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Effects of domestication related genes on behaviour, physiology and gene expression in chickens

    Författare :Anna-Carin Karlsson; Per Jensen; Randi Oppermann Moe; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Domestication, the process when animals adapt to captivity, tends to modify a whole array of traits towards what has been termed “the domesticated phenotype”, where the domesticated animal differs from its wild ancestor in morphology, physiology, development and behaviour. Physiological traits and behaviours are controlled by genes. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Helium Filled Bubbles in Solids : Nucleation, Growth and Swelling

    Författare :Odd Runevall; Nils Sandberg; Charlotte Becquart; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Helium; Radiation Damage; DFT; molybdenum; MgO;

    Sammanfattning : When nuclear fuel, fabricated for the purpose of transmuting spent fuel is irradiated, significant amounts of He is produced from alpha particles mainly emitted when 242Cm decays into 238Pu. From irradiation experiments it is known that the presence of He in the solids alters the swelling behaviour of the material. LÄS MER
