1. Disease, Death, and Displacement : The long-term effects of early-life conditions on income, education, and health in Sweden, 1937-2011
Sammanfattning : How are people’s lives shaped by what they experience during infancy, childhood, and adolescence? How are their adult lives impacted by a sudden improvement or worsening in their early-life conditions?This dissertation aims at providing some insights about how specific changes in early-life conditions can affect individuals’ lives in the long-term. It focuses on three very different shocks to early-life conditions: (1) exposure to disease and vaccination, studied through the case of polio and the vaccine against it, (2) experiencing forced migration, studied through the case of Yugoslavian refugees in Sweden, and (3) losing a parent during the childhood years. 2. Urbanization and Education : The Effect of Childhood Urban Residency on Educational Attainment
Sammanfattning : Essay I: Does rural to urban migration in developing countries improve the opportunities available to children? And does childhood urban exposure increase educational attainment? Using census data for 14 African countries combined with an age-at-move design, I show that childhood exposure to cities significantly raises primary school completion, school attendance, and literacy rates. The increase in educational attainment is robust to the inclusion of household fixed effects, visible in all subgroups and countries, and particularly large for girls. LÄS MER
3. Essays on Income and Fertility: Sweden 1968-2009
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this dissertation is to produce a cohesive study on how income is related to different events that constitute fertility, such as entry into parenthood, continued childbearing, and the risk of remaining childless. Relying on register-based longitudinal data on men and women living in Sweden between 1968 and 2009, this study aims to contribute to the literature by providing insight into whether or not income facilitates fertility and how it changes across parity transitions, gender, and educational attainment.
