21. Tryptophan-related Neurotransmission in the Brain: Disturbances Associated with Experimental Hepatic Encephalopathy
Sammanfattning : In the present study, L-tryptophan (TRP)-related disturbances in the brain in experimental hepatic encephalopathy (HE) were investigated. The endogenous NMDA-receptor agonist and L-TRP metabolite quinolinic acid (QUIN) has been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of HE. LÄS MER
22. Novel complement regulatory mechanisms in disease
Sammanfattning : The complement system is one of the most important defence mechanisms against bacteria and pathogens. It acts within the framework of both innate and adaptive immunity. LÄS MER
23. Neurotrophins and nitric oxide in relation to airway responses in experimental asthma in vivo
Sammanfattning : Asthma is an inflammatory disease of allergic or non-allergic genesis characterized by intermittent reversible airway obstruction and variable degrees of persistent airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Increase in AHR likely arises from augmented airway inflammation, such as associated with a late airway response. LÄS MER
24. Chitosan Polyplexes as Non-Viral Gene Delivery Systems : Structure-Property Relationships and In Vivo Efficiency
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis was to develop and optimize delivery systems for plasmid DNA (pDNA) based on biocompatible polymers, in particular chitosan, suitable for non-viral gene therapy. At the onset of this thesis, studies had reported conflicting results on the efficiency of chitosan-based gene delivery systems. LÄS MER
25. Hematopoiesis in a Crustacean
Sammanfattning : Hemocytes (blood cells) play an important role in the immune response in invertebrates, and thus the regulation of hemocyte homeostasis (hematopoiesis) is essential for the host survival against pathogens. Astakine 1, a homologue to vertebrate prokineticins, was first identified in the freshwater crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus as a cytokine, and was found to be necessary for new hemocyte synthesis and release in vivo, and also to induce spreading and proliferation of Hematopoietic tissue cells (Hpt cells, precursor of hemocytes) in vitro.
