  1. 1. Spider Silk Nanostructuring and its Applications for Tissue Engineering

    Författare :Linnea Gustafsson; Wouter van der Wijngaart; David Kaplan; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; recombinant spider silk; nanostructures; microstrucutres; nanowires; nanochains; nanodisks; nanomembranes; tissue engineering; in-vitro models; medical technology; health technology; nanomedicine; rekombinant spindelsilke; nanostrukturer; mikrostrukturer; nanotrådar; nanokedjor; nanodiskar; nanomembran; vävnadsteknik; in vitro-modeller; medicinsk teknik; hälsoteknik; nanomedicin; Electrical Engineering; Elektro- och systemteknik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis introduces new ways to produce micro-and nanostructures of recombinant spider silk and explores ways to characterize their topography, mechanical properties, cell compatibility, and permeability. The suitability of the formed structures for applications within tissue engineering, primarily in vitro tissue modeling, is also investigated. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Recreating the microenvironment of the neurovascular unit

    Författare :Isabelle Matthiesen; Anna Herland; Thomas E. Winkler; Stéphanie Descroix; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microphysiological systems; neurovascular unit; induced pluripotent stem cells; extracellular matrix; hydrogels; in vitro models; mikrofysiologiska system; neurovaskulära enheten; inducerade pluripotenta stamceller; extracellulära matrisen; hydrogeler; in vitro modeller; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Sammanfattning : The neurovascular unit (NVU) comprises the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and its surrounding astrocytes, pericytes and neurons that are embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As the main function of the BBB is to protect the brain from inlet of pathogens and toxins, the specialized endothelial cells that keep the barrier tight will also hinder the passage of pharmaceuticals. Författare :Sebastian Buchmann; Anna Herland; Erica Zeglio; Agneta Richter-Dahlfors; Maria Asplund; KTH; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; organic bioelectronics; organic electrochemical transistors; conjugated polymers; microphysiological systems; in vitro cell models; Organisk bioelektronik; organiska elektrokemiska transistorer; Konjugerade polymerer; Mikrofysiologiska system; in vitro-modeller; Medicinsk teknologi; Medical Technology;

    Sammanfattning : Biological processes in the human body are regulated through complex and precise arrangements of cell structures and their interactions. In vivo models serve as the most accurate choice for biological studies to understand these processes. However, they are costly, time-consuming, and raise ethical issues. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ischemic Cell Death in the CNS - applications of a new in vitro model

    Författare :Tobias Cronberg; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; Neurology; astrocyte; stroke; adenosine; hyperglycaemia; glucose; free radicals; calcium; in vitro; brain ischemia; slice; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Ischemic brain damage is a common cause of death and disability. A global ischemic insult is usually the result of a transient cardiac arrest while occlusion of cerebral blood vessels leads to focal ischemic lesions, commonly termed stroke. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Mechanisms of Ischemic Brain Injury- studies in murine hippocampal slice cultures

    Författare :Anna Rytter; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; adenosine; caspases; hypothermia; in vitro; hippocampus; ischemia; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cerebral ischemia is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the western world. Even though much effort has been put into research and development of effective drugs against ischemic damage there is to date no effective pharmacological brain protective treatment. LÄS MER
