1. On magnesium-modified titanium coatings and magnesium alloys for oral orthopaedic applications : in vitro investigation
Sammanfattning : In dentistry and orthopaedic surgery, research to find and developimproved biomaterials is progressing rapidly.Of specific interest is to accelerate bone formation around theimplant surface, which could improve the reliability of the implanteven in patients with compromised situations. 2. Intestinal permeability : a parameter of mucosal dysfunction
Sammanfattning : The gastrointestinal tract has two opposing functions; to absorb nutrients and electrolytes, and to act as a barrier towards hazardous and non-nutritional substances. In the present thesis the barrier function of the gastrointestinal tract was studied in animal models in vivo, in situ and in vitro. LÄS MER
3. Growth regulation in sarcomas : studies in vivo and in cell culture
Sammanfattning : Sarcomas are malignant tumors of mesenchymal origin, and can arise in soft-tissue and in bones. It has been suggested that the abnormal growth regulation in sarcoma cells may be due to an autocrine mechanism, in which the cells are stimulated by an endogenous production of growth factors. 4. In Vitro Kinetics of Ribosomal Incorporation of Unnatural Amino Acids
Sammanfattning : Ribosomal incorporation of unnatural amino acids (AAs) into peptides or proteins has found broad applications in studying translation mechanism, discovering potential therapeutics, and probing protein structure and function. However, such applications are generally limited by the low incorporation efficiencies of the unnatural AAs. LÄS MER
5. Metal Particles – Hazard or Risk? Elaboration and Implementation of a Research Strategy from a Surface and Corrosion Perspective
Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER
