1. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast
Sammanfattning : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. LÄS MER
2. Continuous Ethanol Production from Dilute-acid Hydrolyzates: Detoxification and Fermentation Strategy
Sammanfattning : The production of fuel ethanol from cellulosic biomass is of growing interest around the world. Lignocellulosic residuals can be used to produce transportation fuel, with the overall process having little net production of greenhouse gases. LÄS MER
3. Ethanol Production from Lignocellulosic Materials: Potential of Continuous Cultivation, Immobilisation, and Zygomycetous Fungi
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the production of bio-ethanol, a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, from dilute-acid lignocellulosic hydrolysate in a continuous immobilised cell system and fermentation of the hydrolysate by a zygomycete organism, M. indicus. LÄS MER
4. Ethanol Production from Cellulosic Biomass by Encapsulated Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Sammanfattning : Unstable oil markets with rising environmental concerns have revived widespread interest in production of fuel ethanol from renewable materials. Cellulosic materials are abundant and prominent feedstocks for cheap ethanol production. However, due to recalcitrant structure of these materials, pretreatment is a prerequisite. LÄS MER
5. Microbial Biofilms in the Bioinformatics Era
Sammanfattning : Adverse effects of anthropogenic impact on the environment have become conspicuous in the past century and among others include the gradual increase in the global CO2 levels, the contamination of air, soil and water by toxic chemicals, and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance among pathogenic microbial species. Microorganisms partake in an extreme diversity of activities in the environment, and hence, constitute the prime candidates to be investigated in understanding of the progression and effects of the aforementioned environmental hazard scenarios.
