1. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Icodextrin (ICO, or polyglucose) is an effective osmotic agent for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (pts). ICO is a soluble polymeric form of glucose with an average molecular 'weight range from 13,000 to 19,000 dalton. Glucose is absorbed from the peritoneal cavity by diffusion. LÄS MER
2. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies
Sammanfattning : Icodextrin is a glucose polymer which is used as osmotic agent to provide sustained ultrafiltration (UF) during the long (8-16 hours) dwell in end-stage renal disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aims of this thesis were to study: the metabolism of icodextrin in the peritoneal cavity and in the circulation of PD patients and non-uremic rats, the role of alpha-amylase in its hydrolysis, and the rate of breakdown of a synthetic maltoheptaose (G7) ex vivo which we propose as a novel measure of amylase mediated oligosaccharide metabolism. 3. Adhesive small bowel obstruction: aspects on epidemiology, treatment, costs and prevention
Sammanfattning : Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common and sometimes life-threatening clinical condition, usually caused by post-operative adhesions. The aims of this thesis were to investigate the outcome after SBO surgery (Paper I), cost of SBO surgery including follow-up (Paper II), incidence of SBO after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery (Paper III), and to assess the safety of using the adhesion preventing substance icodextrin in CRC surgery (Paper IV). 4. Pharmacokinetics and dosimetry in intraperitoneal radioimmunotherapy with 211At
Sammanfattning : The prognosis for patients diagnosed with disseminated cancer is often poor. Radioimmunotherapy (RIT) is a new approach to treat disseminated disease. The aim is to target tumor cells with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) labeled with radionuclides which release cytotoxic particle radiation upon decay. The radionuclide 211At, with half-life 7. LÄS MER
