  1. 1. Breaking the ice : effects of ice formation and winter floods on vegetation along streams

    Författare :Lovisa Lind; Christer Nilsson; Christine Weber; Michael Scott; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; anchor ice; climate change; in-stream; riparian; river ice; streams; vegetation;

    Sammanfattning : Streams in cold regions are characterized by unique hydrological processes that control flow regime and water levels. One of the most important processes is the formation, growth and melting of different types of ice in and around the stream channel during winter. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Ridged sea ice modelling in climate applications

    Författare :Sebastian Mårtensson; Markus Meier; Kristofer Döös; Peter A. Lundberg; Frank Kauker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arctic ocean; Baltic Sea; sea ice; ice dynamics; numerical modelling; climate; ice deformation; ice compression; physical and biogeochemical interactions; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : This work aims to increase our understanding of the nature of large scale features of sea ice from a dynamics point of view.Sea ice plays an important part in the exchange of heat and humidity between sea and air and thus is an important component of the climate system. 3. 3. Light conditions in seasonally ice-covered waters : within the Baltic Sea region

    Författare :Elina Kari; Susanne Kratzer; Matti Leppäranta; Monika Winder; Tiit Kutser; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Seasonal sea ice; Fast ice; Drift ice; Phytoplankton spring bloom; Under-ice plume; Turbidity; Suspended particulate matter; Chlorophyll; Coloured dissolved organic matter; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Seasonal ice cover is a major driver of seasonality in aquatic ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. Ice cover influences the underwater light conditions directly by limiting the light transfer and indirectly by modifying the mixing and circulation under the ice. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Towards Single Molecule Imaging - Understanding Structural Transitions Using Ultrafast X-ray Sources and Computer Simulations

    Författare :Carl Caleman; Janos Hajdu; Richard Neutze; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Molecular biophysics; XFEL; Ultrafast Melting; InSb; Molecular Dynamics; Water Cluster; Evaporation; Secondary Electron; Photo-cathode; Electron Scattering; Energy Loss Function; Single Particle Imaging; X-ray Diffraction; Water; Ice; KI; CsI; Molekylär biofysik;

    Sammanfattning : X-ray lasers bring us into a new world in photon science by delivering extraordinarily intense beams of x-rays in very short bursts that can be more than ten billion times brighter than pulses from other x-ray sources. These lasers find applications in sciences ranging from astrophysics to structural biology, and could allow us to obtain images of single macromolecules when these are injected into the x-ray beam. 5. 5. Winter behaviour of stream salmonids: effects of temperature, light, and ice cover

    Författare :Johan Watz; Larry Greenberg; Eva Bergman; John Piccolo; Svein Jakob Saltveit; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stream salmonids; winter behaviour; efftect of temperatur; light; ice cover; environment; fish populations; Biology; Biologi;

    Sammanfattning : In boreal streams, stream salmonids typically face low water temperatures and variable ice conditions during winter, and thus stream salmonids are expected to use different behavioural strategies to cope with these environmental conditions. The studies presented in this thesis explore how temperature, light intensity, and surface ice affect salmonid behaviour, with focus on drift-feeding and ventilation rates. LÄS MER
