16. Blood Vessels, Biomarkers, and Broken Barriers: lnvestigations of the Brain Vasculature in Models of Neonatal Brain lnjuries
Sammanfattning : Brain injury during the perinatal period can lead to lifelong impairment in cognitive and motor function, or an early death. Term neonatal encephalopathy and preterm germinal matrix haemorrhage are two conditions that can irreversibly injure the brain, but clinical tools for diagnosing and treating these pathologies are lacking. 17. The role of bacterial endotoxin in the immature brain
Sammanfattning : Aim: Epidemiological evidence suggests that infections may increase the vulnerability of the immature brain to further insults. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the role of bacterial endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) on hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury in the immature rat brain, and to evaluate possible underlying mechanisms of increased sensitivity. 18. Protection of the developing brain with trophic factors. Signaling through serine/threonine kinase pathways
Sammanfattning : Background: Perinatal asphyxia still constitutes a clinical hazard associated withconsiderable neurologic morbidity. There is today no therapy in clinical use toprotect the brain after such insult. LÄS MER
19. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS
Sammanfattning : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 20. Inflammation and Cell Profileration Following Perinatal Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in cerebral ischemic injury in the immature brain. The aim of the thesis was to investigate (1) the role of astrocyte activation and reactive gliosis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, (2) the role of complement derived peptide C3a in neonatal HI brain injury, (3) the effect of neonatal HI brain injury on fear learning and behaviour, (4) the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced systemic inflammation on cell proliferation in the developing brain.
