16. Adipocyte size and function in the epididymal and inguinal fat depots
Sammanfattning : Nearly 60% of the worlds adult population is projected to be overweight or obese by 2030. The prevalence of obesity- related diseases, such as type 2 diabetes (T2D), has increased markedly in the past decades. The adipose tissue plays an important role in disease progression of T2D. 17. Lung Emphysema & Cardiac Function
Sammanfattning : Patients with severe lung emphysema have poor quality of life because of impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Concomitant heart disease in severe emphysema is well recognised. The prevailing view is that mainly the right side of the heart is involved, while the issue of left ventricular (LV) involvement is less studied. LÄS MER
18. Variability and adaptation in the contractile system of smooth muscle
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the large diversity of the contractile properties in smooth muscle. Six studies, I-VI, are included. I: a slow smooth muscle (aorta) has a different nucleotide and phosphate dependence compared to a fast type (taenia coli). LÄS MER
19. Studies on malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias and their treatment with an implantable defibrillator
Sammanfattning : Aims: To investigate the hemodynamic, metabolic and autonomic effects of ventricular fibrillation per se during maintained circulation. To study the defibrillation threshold (DFT) and efficacy of a new and thinner ICD lead (DSP) compared with the standard lead (C). LÄS MER
20. Left ventricular hypertrophy and the insulin resistance syndrome
Sammanfattning : Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the insulin resistance syndrome are common conditions associated with a markedly increased cardiovascular risk. In a fairly large prospective longitudinal study of men from the general population, we found that an unfavorable serum fatty acid profile and components of the insulin resistance syndrome such as dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension at age 50 predicted the prevalence of LVH at age 70.
